Brockport falls to Potsdam

Brockport recorded a total of 8 shots in the first period to Potsdam's 7, yet both teams failed to score in the first. The score stayed tied at 0-0 heading into the first intermission.

It looked like the second period was going to end at 0-0 still, but the visiting Bears got on the board late in the period. Potsdam scored the first goal of the night at 19:58 into the second period, sneaking it past Wiemer with two second to spare. Potsdam was up 1-0 going into the final frame.

Brockport answered back early in the third period with strong defense and good possession in the offensive zone but failed to get the puck past Perno.

Brockport pulled Wiemer with less than a minute left looking to tie the game up with an extra skater. However, Potsdam scored on the empty net for the final goal of the night to earn the 2-0 win.

Dylan Wiemer played a total of 58:55 between the pipes tonight making a total of 18 saves and allowing one goal.

Brockport loses to Geneseo

Friday night, January 19th, the SUNY Brockport hockey team lost to the nationally ranked Geneseo Knights at home, 8-2. The loss puts Brockport at 6-10-2 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

It was Chase Maxwell and Manny Sanchez who found the back of the net for the Golden Eagles on the night. Maxwell scored in the second period, assisted by Spencer Flansburg on the play. Sanchez added Brockport's second goal in the third period, assisted by Andrew Harley and Nick Serafin.

David Filak got the start in net, making 18 saves in just over 31 minutes of action. Filak allowed six goals before Brockport made a goalie switch in the second period. Dylan Wiemer finished out the game between the pipes, making 16 saves and allowing two goals.

Halfway through the opening period Geneseo would strike first to take a 1-0 lead and went on to control the game the rest of the way. The Knights scored three times in the first, taking a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

In the second period, Geneseo added four more goals to the tally on the scoreboard. Brockport put an end to the shutout bid with Maxwell's fifth goal of the season, thanks to Flansburg's sixth helper. However the visiting team remained in charge, 7-1, heading into the final frame.

The Knights would find the back of the net once more before the final horn, with their eighth goal of the game in the third period. With just four minutes left to play, Sanchez netted his fourth of the season to create the 8-2 final. Harley earned his sixth assist of the season, while Serafin registered his third.

Roach is SUNYAC Rookie of the Week

The SUNYAC announced on Monday that Brockport's Connor Roach was named the SUNYAC Men's Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week.

Roach made a strong impact in the Golden Eagles' win over Fredonia at home earlier in the week. He recorded two goals on eight shots in the game, as the squad pulled out the win 5-1. He also finished with a +2 rating for the night on the ice.

Miller commits to Brockport

Kaleb Miller, a forward for the Boston Jr. Rangers, has committed to SUNY Brockport for the fall of 2024.

The '03 native of Traverse City, MI is in his second season with the Rangers' program, and over the course of 63 career games in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL), Miller has tallied 49 points to his credit on 30 goals and 19 assists.

"We are very excited for Kaleb's commitment to Brockport," said Rangers head coach and general manager Rich DeCaprio. "He has worked so hard over the last 2 seasons here to become the player and person he is today. Fighting through adversity both on and off the ice, he's been able to keep his focus on his goals, both personally and as a leader of our team. His slick style, IQ, and goal-scoring touch will be welcomed at Brockport!"

Speaking of that 'goal-scoring touch', it's one area that Miller has displayed a drastic improvement in. After scoring five total goals throughout the entire 2022-23 campaign, Miller currently leads the EHL in goals scored so far this year, having found the back of the net 25 times. It makes it very safe to say that Brockport's interest continued to increase with every goal that he scored.

"The last two years with BJR have been unbelievable," said Miller. "Coach DeCaprio has helped me tremendously. He has truly helped me become the player and person I am today. His ability to get the most out of his players and teach us the college style of the game are a few of the many things that makes him such a great coach. Coach [Brian] Dickinson has been great as well. Throughout the recruiting process he has been honest and easy to talk to. It makes me very excited to be a part of Brockport, both academically and athletically, for the next 4 years."

Now, with this decision complete, Miller will turn his entire attention towards the remainder of the season in the EHL, as he hopes to lead the Rangers to back-to-back titles.

Brockport will have a new local foe: St. John Fisher

St. John Fisher University will add two intercollegiate hockey teams to its athletic offerings beginning in 2025, and will be the first collegiate partner of the Rochester Ice Center, the program’s home ice.

Logo: St. John Fisher University Athletics

The addition of men’s and women’s hockey teams to the roster of sports offered at the University broadens its total number of athletic teams competing in the NCAA Division III to 26.

Fisher’s athletics department is now in the recruiting phase, and incoming hockey student-athletes will enter the University in the fall 2025 semester. At the collegiate level, the hockey season runs from October to March.

This news builds upon recent years of growth in the Fisher Athletics Department as well as the increasing popularity of hockey in the Western New York region and on campus. Fisher’s club hockey team won the American Division Championship at the AAU College Hockey Tournament in March 2023.

“We are confident that our University’s academic offerings, continuing growth, and reputation and record in the NCAA Division III will enable us to successfully recruit hockey student-athletes to Fisher who will add to our success,” said Jose Perales, vice president for enrollment management. “We look forward to providing the total Fisher experience to students who might now consider Fisher because of the opportunity to play intercollegiate hockey. Not only will they have access to a state-of-the-market academic experience but the exceptional Fisher Athletics experience as well.”

The University anticipates a roster size of 25-30 student-athletes on both the men’s and women’s teams with an eye toward their first competitive intercollegiate game in fall 2025.

“This is an exciting time at Fisher and expanding our intercollegiate athletic offerings to reflect the growing interest in hockey adds to that excitement,” said Bob Ward, athletics director at Fisher. “Through our partnership with the premier facility in the region, the Rochester Ice Center, our student-athletes will have access to cutting edge facilities, and a place to call home.”

The University said that next steps include hiring a coaching staff and the finalization of the sport’s conference affiliation.

Stylus recap of Fredonia game

By Brayden Peters/Staff Writer

After going on a streak of wins, Brockport’s hockey team fell short to Fredonia in overtime 4-3 on Brockport’s Alumni Night. The Brockport alumni who were inducted into the Wall of Honor for 2023 recently were present at the game. To honor Brockport hockey’s 50th Anniversary, the team wore retro uniforms that were based on those worn back in the ‘70s. Although Brockport does get a point in the standings for sending the game to overtime, they are still towards the bottom.

Brockport was off to a slow start in the first period as Fredonia’s offense put them on their heels for most of the period. However, the Golden Eagles had some life after forward Chase Maxwell scored on the powerplay. Following that goal Brockport began to find a rhythm offensively. Even so, the Blue Devils’ defense prevented them from getting many high-quality scoring chances.

The Golden Eagles looked like they were going to go into the second period up 1-0. However, Blue Devils defenseman Kieran Furlonger scored a wrist shot goal from the point with 4.8 seconds left to go in the first. Maxwell knew that in the upcoming second period, they needed to play more consistently.

“We had a tough second period yesterday,” Maxwell said. “We got to make sure we don’t have a bad period…get pucks deep and we should be fine.”

However, the second period looked like Maxwell didn’t want it to go for the first half of it. Forwards Antoine St. Onge and Peter Buerfent each scored to give Fredonia a 3-1 lead, with St. Onge’s goal being on the power play. The game was looking like Fredonia would run away with it, but Brockport wouldn’t roll over.

The Golden Eagles responded with two goals of their own, with forward Michael Meredith and defenseman Cam Barbagallo scoring to tie the game 3-3. Meredith’s goal carried a little extra significance being he is from Fredonia and his father, Jeff Meredith, is the head coach for the Blue Devils’ hockey team. Whatever was working on offense in the back half of the second period, Meredith knew they needed to keep doing it in the third.

“We just need to get back to our game,” Meredith said. “We have to keep forechecking hard, but then it’s going to be the hard team that wins. That’s all it takes. Just keep grinding away down low.”

The third period didn’t bring as much excitement or fireworks as before. Both teams created many scoring opportunities, but couldn’t capitalize. This was thanks to good defensive play and outstanding performances from goalies Dylan Weimer for Brockport and Charles-Anthony Barbeau for Fredonia.

Due to no one lighting the lamp in the third period, the game was sent to overtime. Fredonia almost put the game away early in overtime, but Weimer came up with a huge pad save. Brockport tried to move the puck to create an open shooting lane, but defenseman Jacob Rodrigue turned over the puck to Fredonia defenseman Xavier Fortin. He took the puck down the ice all alone and scored the game-winning goal on Weimer, giving the Blue Devils a 4-3 win over the Golden Eagles.

It was a tough loss for Brockport as they were riding a wave of momentum from the previous three games that resulted in two wins and one tie, which ended in a shootout win for the Golden Eagles against Skidmore. With the loss, Brockport falls to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in SUNYAC play. As for Fredonia, the win puts them at 3-7 on the season and 3-4 in SUNYAC play. Brockport head coach Brian Dickinson has noticed how inconsistent play in the second period has hurt the team, even though injuries have played a role in this.

“When you don’t come out in the middle period, that’s the difference,” Dickinson said. “We just got to get a little bit more consistent. Part of that is the two guys up front that were out, with Schuyler (Flansberg) and Nick (Serafin). It kind of juggled our lineup in practice and these guys didn’t have a lot of time to practice with each other.”

Brockport has a quick turnaround before its next game against Morrisville State (3-9, 1-5) on Wednesday. With the short time that the Golden Eagles have to prepare, Dickinson believes it will come down to how much his team knows the importance of that game.

“It’s all about the preparation for us to make sure that we know going in that it’s two much-needed points for us,” Dickinson said. “Two points with Morrisville gives us the same two that Buff State got and we separate from them a little bit.”

The opening puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Wegmans Ice Arena on Wednesday.

Stylus recap of Buffalo State game

By: Brayden Peters/Staff Writer

The ball keeps rolling for the Golden Eagles hockey team as they beat Buffalo State 5-3 on Friday on Teddy Bear Toss Night. Brockport has now won three in a row including two over ranked opponents.

The first period brought a lot of excitement to the Brockport faithful as Brockport forward Connor Galloway got the puck past Buffalo State goalie Marcus Cumberworth’s left side. Teddy bears, big and small, rained down onto the ice after the goal was scored. The experience was surreal for Galloway.

“It seemed like every single person is throwing teddy bears,” Galloway said. “Right when it happened, you kind of just black out…and you are skating to the line and bears are hitting you, it’s a pretty cool feeling.”

Brockport kept pushing the puck into the offensive zone with little resistance, which allowed them to score another goal thanks to forward Matt Anastasio tipping in a shot from defenseman Jordan Rosenbaum. On the defensive side, Brockport was to simply put it: lights out. Buffalo State was only able to muster four shots in the period as the Golden Eagles’ defense forced several turnovers.

The second period was a complete turnaround for the Bengals. They started to put Brockport’s defense on their heels, playing with speed and physicality. With that, forward Joe Glamos managed to tip one in to make it a 2-1 game. Brockport responded, with forward Scott Ramaekers scoring on a one-timer.

Even though Brockport seemed to be at a comfortable lead, they struggled to clear the puck out of their defensive zone and took three penalties during the second period. This forced Brockport to defend for much of the second period. They successfully killed off all three powerplays, but the Bengals built momentum off of them. Before the second came to a close forwards Anthony Morin and Tyler Penree each notched a goal to tie the game at three heading into the third period.

Brockport’s offense still applied pressure on Buffalo State’s defense, which did better compared to the first period. However, the Golden Eagles looked off. Ramaekers felt throughout the whole team during the second period and knew work needed to be done in the third.

“We got to sell out,” Ramaekers said. “I mean we kind of eased up a little bit that period. They came with energy after we took it to them.”

In other games that we have seen from Brockport, they have struggled to bounce back to win games when they lost a great deal of momentum. However, they changed this narrative with their performance in the third period.

The Golden Eagles came out of the period swinging and reverted to how they played in the first. Buffalo State looked exactly like how they played in the first as well, struggling to get more than one shot on goal off the entire period. Due to Brockport’s play, Galloway went end-to-end and scored to put Brockport up 4-3.

Brockport wasn’t done yet, as forward Josh Grund scored to make it a 5-3 game. Although the Bengals were able to tie the game earlier trailing by two, it looked like the game was out of reach as they looked demoralized, and their tempers began to flare.

After scoring, Grund was knocked to the ground by Penree, leading Brockport defenseman Jacob Rodrigue to push him hard into the boards. A skirmish ensued from the incident and led to Rodrigue being thrown out of the game.

Although the loss of one of their top defensemen was critical, Brockport didn’t waver and secured the victory with a 5-3 win. Brockport Head Coach Brian Dickinson was happy with the win, even though he felt like he wasn’t watching the same game.

“That was a tale of like two different games or almost three different games,” Dickinson said. “It was a total team win.”

With the win, Brockport improves to 4-6-1 on the season and 2-4 in conference play. As for Buffalo State, the loss puts them at 4-7 for the season and 2-4 in conference play. Brockport will take on Fredonia Saturday night for Alumni Night, which Dickinson knows will not be an easy game.

“We’re going to play a team that plays heavy,” Dickinson said. “We got to be able to outplay them and outcompete them. If we can play like we have, two points are there for us to take.”

More alumni will have their names added to the Wall of Honor pregame and Brockport will be wearing their retro-styled uniforms that were recently released to mark the 50-year celebration. The puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Holland commits to Brockport

Mike Holland
, a forward for the Connecticut Chiefs, has committed to SUNY Brockport for the fall of 2024.

The '03 native of Portsmouth, NH is in the middle of his second season of junior hockey, and first at the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) level. Holland's first year of juniors (2022-23) took place at the Eastern Hockey League Premier (EHLP) level, with his time split between the Railers Jr. Hockey Club and the Chiefs.

Overall to date, Holland's career numbers stand at 29 points in 41 career games in the EHLP, and three points in his first 15 games in the EHL.

"Mike is a hard-nose, 200-foot player, who competes every shift," said Chiefs head coach and general manager Greg Heffernan. "Brockport just got a player who focuses on process over points, and self sacrifice for the betterment of the team. He will thrive in Coach [Brian] Dickinson's program."

Speaking of the Brockport hockey program, the Golden Eagles have always heavily recruited players from the EHL, and look no further for proof then the 21 alumni currently on the roster.

As for next fall, Holland is now one of two EHL players that have committed to Brockport so far this year, as he will team up with Connor McAleer from the Railers when he arrives on campus.

"God really answered my prayers and felt that it was his will for me to commit to SUNY Brockport," said Holland. "When I toured SUNY Brockport, I saw first-hand their amazing athletic facility, amazing campus, education, coaching staff and hockey program. Coach Dickinson is tremendous coach, and the players on his roster told me so many great things about how much he cares about them on and off the ice, and how he wants to help them grow as students and athletes. Coach Dickinson was very open, honest, and supportive to me and my parents when we met. Another thing that really helped is he loves the type of player that I am and is confident on what I can bring to his team and to the school as an athlete and student. I’m very grateful that God has led me to the Connecticut Chiefs organization to play under Coach Heffernan and the other great coaching staff. My teammates and coaches have really helped me to continue pushing me to develop at my role and being a leader, both on and off the ice."

Holland is the 2nd Chief in three years to choose Brockport, as he will follow the path paved by Dominic Chirico back in the 2021-22 season.
