PLATTSBURGH WINS BATTLE OF THE HAT TRICKS

Junior James Ryan (Richmond Hill, ONT) scored a hat trick as The College at Brockport Hockey team nearly completed a thrilling comeback before dropping a 4-3 decision to Plattsburgh, ranked No. 8 in the USCHO.com national poll, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game in Plattsburgh.

After Plattsburgh (14-4-1 Overall, 10-1-0 SUNYAC) scored the first two goals of the game in a span of 3:30 midway through the first period, Ryan scored the first of his three goals – all on the power play - for the first Brockport (9-8-1, 4-5-1) goal to cut the lead in half with 4:26 left in the period.

Plattsburgh added two more goals in a span of 1:30 near the end of the period to take a 4-1 lead into the first intermission.

In the second period, Ryan scored a power play goal for Brockport to trim the lead to 4-2 with an assist from Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) at the 10:48 mark in the period for the only goal of the stanza.
Trailing by a pair of goals in the third period, Brockport continued to apply the pressure in the Plattsburgh defensive end of the ice and had several good scoring opportunities before Ryan cut the lead to just a single goal with his second goal of the night and Brockport's third power play goal of the game.

Luker sent a pass to the slot area where Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT) drew three defenders before threading a perfect pass to Ryan on the right side of the net and Ryan redirected the puck into the open side of the goal making it a 4-3 game with 7:22 to play in the third period.

The Golden Eagles continued to apply the offensive pressure for most of the remainder of the game. With 1:01 left to play, Jake Taylor (Port Perry, ONT) threw a back pass between his legs to the stick of Jeremy DeFazio (Oakville, ONT) on the corner of the net but DeFazio's attempt to stuff the puck into the Plattsburgh goal was stopped at the goal line.

With :30 remaining, Plattsburgh was whistled for a boarding call that would have given the Golden Eagles the man advantage for the remainder of the game but in the confrontation following the stoppage of play, Andrew Parks (Orillia, ONT) was also sent to the penalty box with a cross checking penalty that nullified the power play possibility for Brockport.

In the closing seconds, Plattsburgh was able to clear the puck down the ice to salvage the win.
Senior Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT) finished with 34 saves including 20 in the final two periods for Brockport.

LUKER IS BROCKPORT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Junior defenseman Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) has been named The College at Brockport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 26. Luker helped the Golden Eagles split a weekend State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup against Morrisville with his playmaking ability.

Brockport (9-7-1 Overall, 4-4-1 SUNYAC) exuded great energy against Morrisville on Jan. 23, and the Golden Eagles offense was connecting on all cylinders. Luker was able to set up several goals in the game as Brockport clinched its fourth SUNYAC win of the year, defeating the Mustangs 7-3. Luker recorded all four of his assists in the third period while Brockport exploded offensively and took a commanding lead on the game.

In the second game of the weekend series against Morrisville, Brockport allowed an early goal but responded shortly after. The Mustangs committed a penalty at the 12:48 marker, giving Brockport the man advantage. The Golden Eagles responded by tying the game one minute later. Luker passed the puck to his Golden Eagle teammate who then rifled it past the Mustangs goalie, giving Luker his fifth assist of the weekend. Brockport fell to Morrisville in the second game 3-1.

GREEN IS SUNYAC GOALIE OF THE WEEK

Senior goaltender Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT) has been named the State University of New York Athletic (SUNYAC) Goalie of the Week. Green led The College at Brockport Ice Hockey team to a weekend split against SUNYAC opponent Morrisville.

Green won his seventh straight game Friday evening, a convincing 7-3 victory over the Mustangs. Brockport took a 3-0 lead early in the second period before the Mustangs aggressively sought to score their first goal. Green denied Morrisville 14 times during the second period but the Mustangs were able to score its first goal with about a minute remaining in the period. Overall Green, finished the game with 27 saves.

In the second game of a weekend series against Morrisville, Brockport fell 3-1 to the Mustangs. However Green put in another stellar performance in net for the Golden Eagles. In the first two periods of play Green saved nine shots apiece. The Mustangs held a 2-1 lead at the second intermission mark. In the third period Green stopped eight shots before being pulled for the extra skater. An empty net goal gave the Mustangs the 3-1 win.

Green currently leads the SUNYAC in goals against average (1.44) and save percentage (.950). He also is 8-3-0 on the season while posting two shutouts.

BROCKPORT FALLS TO MORRISVILLE

Freshman Ryan Kangas (Williamstown, MA) scored a power play goal late in the first period for The College at Brockport Hockey team to tie the score at 1-1 but Morrisville regained the lead in the second period and sealed a 3-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory with an empty net goal late in the game Saturday night in the Tuttle North Ice Arena in Brockport.

Brockport (9-7-1 Overall, 4-4-1 SUNYAC) posted a 7-3 victory over the same Morrisville (5-8-5, 3-5-2) team 24 hours earlier.

The Mustangs opened the scoring at the 12:48 mark of the first period but were whistled for a goalie interference penalty four minutes later giving the Golden Eagles a power play opportunity.

A minute into the power play, Kangas rifled a shot past Morrisville goalie Stephen Dombrosky to tie the score at 1-1. Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) recorded his fifth assist of the weekend on the play and Aidan Verbeke (Elmwood Park, IL) also added an assist.

In the second period, Morrisville regained the lead 6:04 into the period and held the lead for the remainder of the game.

Brockport had several good chances to tie the score and had a power play for most of the final three minutes of action but could not score the equalizer. With just 17 seconds left in the period, the Mustangs added an empty net goal for the final margin of victory.

The loss is just the second in the past nine games and the first conference loss since November 22.
Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT) made 26 saves.

NIEUWENDYK GETS HAT TRICK

If the NCAA really needed further proof that Chase Nieuwendyk is All-American material, how about last night's performance? Knowing he had to keep pace with a good offensive team like Morrisville, he scored a hat trick and added 2 assists. Huge.

Here's the Athletic Department's recap....

Junior Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT) scored three goals and added two assists leading The College at Brockport Hockey team to a convincing 7-3 victory over Morrisville Friday night in the Tuttle North Ice Arena in Brockport. The same two teams will meet again Saturday night in Brockport.
Nieuwendyk scored his first goal midway through the first period to give Brockport (9-6-1 Overall, 4-3-1 SUNYAC) an early 2-0 lead. Senior Bobby Chayka (Hardwick, NJ) scored the first goal of the game five minutes into the contest and Nieuwendyk made it 2-0 2:25 later.

Freshman Zac Sikich (Oak Park, CA) made it a 3-0 Brockport lead at the 9:27 mark of the second period before Morrisville (4-8-5, 2-5-2) scored with 1:03 left in the period to cut the lead to 3-1.

Nieuwendyk had an assist on the Sikich goal in the second and then scored his second of the game 3:30 into the third period to give the Golden Eagles a 4-1 advantage. Less than a minute later, Morrisville added its second goal of the game to cut the lead in half but Sikich scored his second of the game four minutes later with another assist from Nieuwendyk to make it a 5-2 score.

At the 10:37 mark of the third period, Nieuwendyk completed the hat trick as Sikich and Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) each assisted on the play.

The Mustangs made it 6-3 at the 13:02 mark but exactly two minutes later, Ryan Kangas (Williamstown, MA) scored to cap the scoring. The goal by Kangas gave the line of Sikich, Nieuwendyk and Kangas six goals and four assists. Luker added four assists while Troy Polino (Limerick, PA) and David Horan (Kennebunk, ME) each added one assist.

Aaron Green
(Mt. Albert, ONT) made 27 saves to improve his record to 8-2 with his seventh consecutive victory.

BROCKPORT TO HOST MORRISVILLE THIS WEEKEND

After a few non-conference games over the winter break, Brockport Hockey is back at it again this weekend, entering the most dramatic part of the season: The second semester SUNYAC slate.

Every game matters now. Games that should be won, must be won. Games that shouldn’t be won, should be won.

It’s like the playoffs….even though it’s the regular season.

Brockport’s conference record is 3-3-1, good for fourth place, just 3 behind #3 Geneseo. By taking two games this weekend – which is certainly in reach as the Golden Eagles host Morrisville TWICE – Brockport could take over third place as Geneseo won’t have a conference affair until next weekend.

Third place in the SUNYAC. Think about how awesome that sounds right now.

After posting a team-record winning streak (which ended last week against Nazareth), Brockport proves they have what it takes to win this weekend and right through the semester. Goalie Aaron Green has become a force field in the crease – in his last 8 games he has a stat line of a .951 save percentage and a 1.50 goals against average. Chase Nieuwendyk has been nothing short of spectacular, third in the conference with 9 goals, 6 of them power play goals which lead the nation. Chris Luker has been exceptional from the blue line, as he ranks second in scoring amongst SUNYAC defensemen and in the Top 20 nationally among blueliners.

This weekend’s opponent is 2-4-2 in league play while 4-7-5 overall. They are 1-4-3 on the road, so they can prove to give fits to their hosts.

Steve Dombrosky is their #1 in the net with a .887 save percentage and 4.04 GAA.

Joe Santino is their best goal scorer, lighting the lamp 8 times this year. Linemate Darren Young has 12 assists. Those guys are sophomores – and talented -- so they will continue to be a thorn in Brockport’s side for the next couple of years.

Senior Robert Molinaro is also someone to watch for as he has 7 goals.

The team has a little more balance than Brockport does offensively as they have 8 men with double-digit points (Brockport has just 4) and 9 guys with 4 or more goals (Brockport has just 3). So, Green and the defenders will be busy trying to keep them in check.

Goal scoring at even strength may be Brockport’s only weakness. Some of Brockport’s offensive threats who were a little quiet last semester need to keep pace with a solid offense this weekend -- and every weekend here on out. Brockport is certainly a playoff team (and a good one)…and an extra goal here and there would go a long ways in cementing the Golden Eagles’ status (and taking a little pressure off Green, who has been a workhorse).

Both games start at 7:00 PM.

LUKAS COMMITS TO BROCKPORT

Brockport has picked up some firepower as Jamie Lukas has committed to the Golden Eagles. Here's the news release from the Hartford Wolfpack...

"GROWING UP CARLYLE"

The hockey world, though vast and stretching across multiple continents, is a small world nonetheless. Everyone knows everyone, and there's always Six Degrees of Separation when it comes to Brockport Hockey.

When head coach Randy Carlyle was let go by the Maple Leafs recently, it got Carson Shields of "The Hockey Writers" thinking about Randy and his family -- especially Randy's affable son Craig who played for the Golden Eagles from 2005-2006 to 2007-2008 where he amassed 3 goals and 7 assists in 38 career games.

Carson caught up with Craig and penned this excellent article about what it means "Growing Up Carlyle":

BROCKPORT FALLS TO NAZ

Junior Jeremy DeFazio (Oakville, ONT), sophomore Andrew Parks (Orillia, ONT) and freshman Dylan Shapiro (Rochester, NY) all scored goals for The College at Brockport Hockey team but a late empty-net goal sealed a 5-3 victory for Nazareth College Friday night as the Golden Eagle's school-record six-game win streak was snapped on home ice at the Tuttle North Ice Arena in Brockport.

Brockport (8-6-1) took an early lead as Parks scored just 1:23 into the game. Defensemen Bobby Chayka (Hardwick, NJ) and Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) assisted on the play as the Golden Eagles took the early lead.

Midway through the first period, Nazareth (6-6-3) tied the score with a short-handed goal and took a 2-1 lead three minutes later as Brockport was limited to just four shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes of action.

In the second period, Brockport tied the score 3:28 into the period when Shapiro picked up a loose puck and wrapped around the back of the goal to slip the puck into the open half of the net for a 2-2 tie. Nazareth regained the lead four minutes later before DeFazio tied the game again at the 11:20 mark in the period.

DeFazio had an open shot from 15 feet out after a pass from Jesse Facchini (Mississauga, ONT) to a wide open DeFazio on the right side of the goal.

Four minutes later, Nazareth took the lead for good with less than four minutes to play in the second period.

In the third period, Brockport killed off a five-minute power play and had several good scoring chances late in the game after pulling goalie Jared Lockhurst (Caledon, ONT) for the extra attacker.

The Golden Eagles went on a power play for the final 25 seconds of play but a turnover in the neutral zone led to an empty net goal for Nazareth to secure the win with 2.2 seconds left on the clock.

The six-game win streak was tied for the longest current win streak in the country.

Brockport returns to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play next weekend with a pair of back-to-back games against Morrisville on Friday and Saturday. Both games are in Brockport and start at 7 pm.

AARON GREEN'S NUMBERS

How well has Aaron Green been playing? In his first start of the season, he gave up 7 goals to Nazareth. If you take that game out of the equation, his other 8 games have a stat line of a .951 save percentage and a 1.50 goals against average. Truly amazing numbers.

DeFAZIO IS BROCKPORT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Junior Jeremy DeFazio (Oakville, ONT) has been named The College at Brockport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 12.

DeFazio has been a key member in the Golden Eagles Ice Hockey record breaking win streak. On the week DeFazio registered two goals and an assist helping Brockport secure two more victories and setting a new school record of six straight victories.

On January 5 against Southern New Hampshire, DeFazio scored two goals in a 3-1 victory. The win tied the previous school record of five straight wins by Brockport. DeFazio redirected a slap shot from the blue line past the Southern New Hampshire goalie to give the Golden Eagles the early lead. Southern New Hampshire tied the score in the second period, but Brockport answered with a topping goal in the third period. Late in the game, DeFazio scored an empty net security goal as Southern New Hampshire pulled their goalie in an attempt to pressure Brockport into a game-tying goal.

The Golden Eagles broke the win streak record on Jan. 10 against Elmira. It was a tightly contested game as both team’s offenses were clicking and the referees whistles were blowing often. Elmira was ahead of Brockport after scoring two power play goals early into the second period. However the Golden Eagles fought resiliently and tied the score 11:42 into the second period on their own power play goal. A few minutes later Elmira again had the one man advantage as Brockport was whistled with a penalty, however the Golden Eagles scored after DeFazio sent a pass to his teammate who put the puck past the goalie for the game-winning goal. Brockport won the road game 5-3, and improved its record to 8-5-1 on the season.

BROCKPORT BY THE NUMBERS

On the heels of a team-record 6-game winning streak and an overall record of 8-5-1, it’s a good time to see how Brockport and its players rank nationally.

Looking at the leading point scorers in the nation, Chase Nieuwendyk comes in at 50th in the country with 1.14 points per game on the strength of a 9-7-16 line. He’s also 23rd in the nation in goals per game at .64 His 9 lamplighters are third in the SUNYAC --- Oswego’s Hulshof has 10 while Cortland’s Zappia has an utterly-insane 17. Chase also leads the nation in power play goals with 6. He is certainly making a case for All-SUNYAC and maybe All-American.

Defenseman Chris Luker is duplicating last season’s great output, as he’s 63rd in the nation in assists per game at .71. Among defensemen, he is 18th in the nation in scoring with .86 points per game. His 12 points are second in the conference to Oswego’s Gertsakis who has 13 points. Chris, too, is making a strong case for All-SUNYAC and All-American honors.

Ryan Kangas rounds out the top 100 assists men in the nation with .64 assists per game. His .79 points per game place him 31st in the nation among rookies.

Zac Sikic has 2 game winning goals and the national leader has 4.

Aaron Green’s goals against average of 2.17 is 22nd best in the country and fourth best in the SUNYAC. Jared Lockhurst’s 3.29 is good for 72nd overall.

Green’s save percentage of .931 would set a team record were he to maintain this pace. He’s 19th in the country. Jared Lockhurst is also in the Top 40, coming in at 38th with a .917.

Green’s winning percentage of .778 has him ranked 17th best in the country. Green’s 2 shutouts are just behind the national lead of 4. Conference leader Nick Horrigan of Geneseo has 3.

Brockport’s offense is 37th in the nation at 3 goals per game. The defense is 27th at 2.64 goals per game, which is third best in the SUNYAC.

Brockport’s power play is 9th best in the nation at 28.3%. Only Oswego has a better one in the conference. The penalty kill is 42nd, which accounts for a 14th ranking in terms of combined special teams, best in the conference.

The team’s winning percentage is .607 and 23rd best.

Amazing numbers across the board. They should pay off with a prolonged playoff run and, who knows, maybe a shot at the SUNYAC championship.

BROCKPORT WINS SIXTH STRAIGHT

Five different players scored for The College at Brockport Hockey team including the game-winner by Kody Vaisanen (Dundalk, ONT) in the second period as the Golden Eagles won for the school-record sixth consecutive game with a 5-3 victory Saturday over Elmira College in Pine Valley, NY. The six straight wins is tied with Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Trinity for the longest current winning streak in the country.

Vaisanen's goal – a short-handed goal – with just over six minutes to play in the second period gave Brockport (8-5-1) a 4-3 lead. The Golden Eagles added an insurance goal in the third period and kept Elmira (6-5-2) off the board for the final 20 minutes to secure the victory. The win moved Brockport's record against non-conference opponents to 5-2 on the year.

Elmira opened the scoring 4:21 into the game with a short-handed goal. It was the first time in four games that Brockport did not have the lead dating back to the second period of the Manhattanville victory in late November.

The lead did not last long as Brockport answered 34 seconds later and just as the Elmira penalty was expiring as Rob Hall (Schaumberg, IL) scored from the point to tie the score.

James Ryan
(Richmond Hill, ONT) gave Brockport a 2-1 lead late in the first period skating across the slot and firing a high shot into the corner of the net and the Golden Eagles took the 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Late in the first period, Brockport was whistled for a five-minute major penalty and Elmira took advantage with a power play goal early in the second period as the man-advantage carried over to the next period.

A second power play goal four minutes later for Elmira gave the Soaring Eagles another lead at 3-2.
Midway through the period, Jesse Facchini (Mississauga, ONT) scored with the man-advantage for the Golden Eagles to tie the score at 3-3 and just over two minutes later, Vaisanen scored the go-ahead and eventual winning goal for Brockport.

Aaron Green
(Mt. Albert, ONT) made 42 saves for Brockport to earn his sixth straight win and moved him past the 1,000 career save milestone. He currently has 1,014 saves

BROCKPORT WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT

Junior Jeremy DeFazio (Oakville, ONT) scored two goals leading The College at Brockport Hockey team to its fifth straight victory as the Golden Eagles defeated Southern New Hampshire University 3-1 in the first game of the second semester Monday night in Tuttle North Ice Arena in Brockport.

The five straight wins ties the school record for consecutive victories. The Golden Eagles won five straight in 1973-74, again in 1980-81 and once more in 1987-88. The current streak started over the Thanksgiving break with a pair of wins over Tufts and Manhattanville in the Rutland Herald Tournament and continued in early December with the first consecutive shutouts in school history with a pair of 3-0 wins over SUNYAC foes Buffalo State and Fredonia. After nearly a month off, the Golden Eagles tied the school-record streak with the win over Southern New Hampshire.

Senior Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT) stopped 25 shots but allowed a goal in the second period ending a school-record shutout streak at 186 minutes 46 seconds dating back to early in the second period against Manhattanville.

Brockport (7-5-1) opened the scoring late in the first period when DeFazio tipped in a shot from the point from Bobby Chayka (Hardwick, NJ). The play started when Andrew Parks (Orillia, ONT) sent a pass from behind the net out to Chayka at the blue line. Chayka's slap shot was wide to the right but DeFazio was there to redirect the puck into the back of the net for the 1-0 Brockport lead with less than four minutes to play in the first period.

In the second period, Southern New Hampshire (5-6) tied the score with a shorthanded goal on a breakaway after a pass was tipped out of the offensive zone and between the Brockport defensemen.

Midway through the third period, Brockport regained the lead as Troy Polino (Limerick, PA) Took a centering pass from behind the Southern New Hampshire goal and fired a one-timer past the goalie for the 2-1 Brockport lead. Aidan Verbeke (Elmwood Park, IL) had the centering pass and Jake Taylor (Port Perry, ONT) was also credited with an assist on the play.

Late in the third period, Brockport sealed the victory as DeFazio scored an empty-net goal with 26.5 seconds remaining after a long pass from Chayka for the final 3-1 margin.

Brockport will look to continue its win streak Saturday at Elmira College with a 7 pm game against the Soaring Eagles.
