The Golden Eagles impressed once again Sunday afternoon, winning a
shootout against No. 15 Skidmore College to claim the Thanksgiving
Invitational Championship. After playing to a 2-2 tie through overtime,
Brockport took the tournament title with a 1-0 mark in the shootout. The
team is now 3-6-1 overall after upsetting a pair of Top-15 teams over
the weekend.
Jacob Gates
got the ball rolling scoring his first collegiate goal at 18:25 in the
first period. The Green and Gold defender was assisted by Spencer Flansburg and Chase Maxwell. Brockport went into the first intermission of the night up 1-0 over the hosting Thoroughbreds.
Matt Anastasio kept the momentum going, scoring at 13:03 into the second period. He was assisted by Nick Serafin
on the play to provide the Golden Eagles with a 2-0 lead.. Skidmore
snuck a goal past Filak five minutes later, going into the second
intermission down 2-1.
Skidmore tied up the game at 1:58 in the third, putting the score at
2-2. With neither team able to find the back of the net to finish out
regulation, the contest headed into overtime.
After a scoreless 5:00 minute over time both teams headed into their first shootout of the season. Matt Anastasio scored the lone shootout goal and David Filak saved all three attempts of the night earning the Golden Eagles the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational title.
David Filak
played 65:00 minutes in goal making 37 total saves and allowing two
goals. Brockport won 34 of the 59 face offs and were 4-for-4 on the
penalty kill. The Golden Eagles were outshot, 39-16, on the night but
still snagged the tournament title.
