BROCKPORT BEATS CANTON

Brockport beat Canton Friday night at Canton. The teams faceoff at Brockport on Saturday. It was a big night for Zac Sikich as he got his first career hat trick. Chase Nieuwendyk got his 30th point for the season -- and there's still a month of games coming. On top of that, Tim Kielich reached 24 points -- matching the incomparable James Cody's total as the highest rookie point output this century. Could the kid hit 30?

Here's the report from Brockport Athletics...

The College at Brockport ice hockey team netted three goals in the opening period and that's all it took as they beat SUNY Canton 7-2 Friday night in a non-conference game.  Zac Sikich scored his first career hat trick and Jake Moore picked up the win in net.

Canton (3-14-3) scored the lone goal in the second period to make the score 3-1 entering the third period.  Sikich netted a shorthanded goal just 34 seconds into the third period.  Chase Nieuwendyk picked up an assist to extend his points to 12 games.  Three minutes later the Golden Eagles took advantage of a power play to extend its lead to 5-1.  Ryan Kangas received a pass from defensemen Chad Cummings and lit the lamp for his eighth goal of the season.

Midway through the third period Sikich completed the hat trick with Brockport's sixth goal.  Verbeke and Nieuwendyk each picked up an assist on the play.  Nieuwendyk scored an unassisted goal in the final minute to play to seal the 7-2 win for Brockport.

OSWEGO TAKES DOWN BROCKPORT

Dylan Shapiro, Chase Nieuwendyk and Tim Kielich each scored a goal but the College at Brockport ice hockey team gave up two goals in the third period and suffered a 5-3 loss Saturday night to Oswego State in a crucial State University of New York Athletic Conference matchup.

Oswego (9-6-2 overall, 6-3-1 SUNYAC) struck early, taking a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the game.  Nine minutes later Brockport (8-8-2, 4-5-2) took advantage of a Laker major penalty to tie the game at one.  Unable to find an open man, Zac Sikich passed the puck to Nick Palumbo at the top of the point.  Palumbo sent a shot towards the goal but was met by the goaltenders pad.  Dylan Shapiro jumped on the rebound and one timed it to the right side of the net for his sixth goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles came out firing to start the second period and were able to score just over two minutes into the period.  Kielich rifled a shot from the blue line that hit the crossbar and ricocheted in. Rookie Kielich extended his point streak to 10 games.  Aidan Verbeke and Chase Nieuwendyk each picked up an assist on the play.

Two straight goals from the Lakers gave Oswego a 3-2 lead midway through the second period.  With less than five minutes remaining Brockport earned its fifth power play of the night.  At the point, Kielich sent a pass to Verbeke just to the right side of the goal.  Verbeke one touched a pass to Nieuwendyk camped out in front of the crease.  Nieuwendyk sent a one-timer to the left side of the net to tie the game at three and extend his point streak to 11 games.

The Lakers scored two goals, including a power play goal, seven minutes into the third period to jump out to a 5-3 lead.  Oswego dominated the period, outshooting Brockport 18-5, and handing the Golden Eagles their fifth conference loss of the season.

The Golden Eagles struck first 14 minutes into the game as defensemen Rob Hall scored his second goal of the season.  After receiving a pass from Aidan Verbeke, Hall sent a rocket past the goaltender glove side.  Cortland answered back less than 30 seconds later to send the game to a 1-1 tie at the first intermission.

An early Cortland goal found Brockport in a one-goal deficit to start the second period.  The Golden Eagles answered back midway through the period as Jake Taylor scored an unassisted goal after taking the puck coast to coast.

HOCKEY COMMUNITY MOURNS LOSS OF GENESEO PLAYER

Geneseo is our greatest rival, but as Brockport showed earlier this season in the #PrayForJay campaign for Geneseo's Jay Stephanik (who had suffered major brain trauma in an off-ice incident), the brotherhood of hockey is greater than the game itself.

Sadly, it's time to call on the strength and support of that brotherhood again as Geneseo lost one of their own on Sunday.

Matthew Hutchinson, 24, a senior blueliner from North Vancouver, BC, was found dead in a Geneseo home along with two others -- a member of the women's basketball team, Kelsey Annese, and a former Geneseo student, Colin Kingston.

The police have released very few details but listening to police scanner audio that is available online, it appears that Hutchinson was a murder victim.

Hutchinson was a geography major and a business minor who volunteered with the Geneseo volunteer firefighting core and he had aspirations of being a wilderness firefighter back in his home country, something he had done in the summer months. "Hutch" was well-liked by his teammates, coaches and the community.

In his career against Brockport he had an assist in a 4-1 Geneseo victory in February of 2014 and he contributed 2 blocked shots in a 5-3 Geneseo win over Brockport that November.

Geneseo has an information page about the tragedy and what will follow here: http://www.geneseo.edu/jan-17-tragedy

Our thoughts and prayers are with Hutch's family, friends, teammates, and fellow firefighters.
