GREEN IS BROCKPORT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Senior Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT) has been named The College at Brockport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending December 8. Green has sparked a four game win streak for Brockport’s Ice Hockey team.
This past weekend in crucial play against State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opponents Green led Brockport to two victories posting two shutouts. The two consecutive shutout victories is the first time in school history since the varsity hockey program started in 1973.
In Brockport’s 3-0 win against Buffalo State Friday night, Green stopped 33 shots from the Bengals. Buffalo State put lots of pressure on Brockport in the second period but Green would not succumb to the pressure making 19 saves altogether in the second. The Bengals had a two man advantage late in the third period as they pulled their goalie and were on a power play, but Green proved up to the task making four saves when the power play expired.
Green finished with 22 saves against Fredonia Saturday evening, leading Brockport to a 3-0 victory. He has a scoreless streak of nearly 160 minutes, dating back to the second period of Brockport’s victory against Manhattanville in the title game of the Rutland Herald Tournament over Thanksgiving weekend.

Brockport won a 3-0 victory over Fredonia Saturday night in a State
University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game at the Tuttle
North Ice Arena in Brockport. No other Brockport team was able to win
back-to-back games with shutout wins since varsity hockey started at
Brockport in 1973.
Brockport (6-5-1 Overall, 3-3-1 SUNYAC) won for the fourth consecutive game and have lost just once min the past seven games (5-1-1). The closest the Golden Eagles have ever come to consecutive shutouts was back in 1973-74 when Brockport won a 9-0 victory over St. John Fisher. The game prior to that, Brockport won 11-1 over Rutgers and the game following St. John Fisher, Brockport won 9-1 over Canisius.
After two scoreless periods Saturday, Aidan Verbeke (Elmwood Park, IL) scored his second goal in as many nights 4:38 into the final period to break the tie.
Jake Taylor (Port Perry, ONT) fired a shot from the right of the slot area that was deflected by a diving Fredonia (1-5-3, 0-4-2) defender and Verbeke found himself with the puck on the door step with a wide open half of the net and slapped home the first goal of the game.
The score remained 1-0 until late in the period when Brockport broke into the Fredonia zone with Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT) sending a quick pass to Zac Sikich (Oak Park, CA) who then threaded a perfect pass to Ryan Kangas (Williamstown, MA) for the quick shot into the back of the goal for the 2-0 lead.
Fredonia called a time out and tried to narrow the gap by pulling its goalie for the extra attacker but a turnover in the Brockport zone led to an empty net for the 3-0 Brockport lead with 26 seconds to play.

PUTTING GREEN'S CAREER INTO PERSPECTIVE
Last night Aaron Green secured a shutout for the Golden Eagles, the first for the team in almost 5 years. It's a nice accomplishment for Green, who has quietly put together one of the finest careers of any Brockport goaltender. Consider these numbers:

BROCKPORT SHUTS OUT BUFFALO STATE

(Mt. Albert, ONT) made 33 saves including 19 in the second period
leading The College at Brockport to a 3-0 victory over Buffalo State
Friday night in a State University of New York Athletic Conference
(SUNYAC) game at the Tuttle North Ice Arena in Brockport.
The shutout was the first in Green's Brockport career and the first for the Golden Eagles since a 3-0 win over Potsdam Feb. 23, 2010 in the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs as Todd Sheridan stopped 27 shots. The last regular season SUNYAC shutout for the Golden Eagles was back on January 29, 2004 with a 4-0 win over Fredonia as Andy Reynolds stopped 43 shots.
Brockport (5-5-1 Overall, 2-3-1 SUNYAC) took an early lead as freshman Zac Sikich (Oak Park, CA) finished off a quick rush up the ice with his third goal of the season. Junior Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) intercepted a pass in the Brockport defensive zone and sent a pass up the boards to Kody Vaisanen (Dundalk, ONT) who threw a quick pass across the ice to Sikich who broke in on the Buffalo State (1-6-2, 1-4-2) goalie beating him with a low shot 2:43 into the game.
The score remained 1-0 throughout the remainder of the first period, all of the second period and the first 15:34 of the third period as each goalie made several big saves. Green was especially effective in the second period with a season-best 19 saves.
Late in the third period, Brockport scored to take a 2-0 lead as freshman Aidan Verbeke (Elmwood Park, IL) notched his first career goal with assists from Jake Taylor (Port Perry, ONT) and Troy Polino (Limerick, PA). Polino passed the puck into the offensive zone and Taylor charged toward the net with the puck and slipped a backhand pass to the top of the crease where Verbeke slid a shot under the pads of the Bengals goalie for the 2-0 Brockport lead.
Buffalo State went on a power play 11 seconds later and pulled its goalie for the two skater advantage keeping the goalie out for the entire two minute power play as Green made four saves during the extra-man opportunity. Less than 15 seconds after the penalty expired and with the Bengal goalie still on the bench, Brockport sealed the victory with an empty net goal by James Ryan (Richmond Hill, ONT).

STYLUS REPORT ON BROCKPORT'S FRESHMEN
Reporting for the Brockport Stylus, Eric Mueller looks at what the freshmen have meant to the team...
Freshmen helping ice hockey continue to compete
The College at Brockport ice hockey team is 10 games into the season. The team has a record of 4 - 5 - 1 overall. Brockport had an impressive 4 - 4 tie against SUNY Oswego the No. 2 team in the nation, Brockport is now unbeaten in Oswego the past two seasons.
This past weekend, the Golden Eagles came away with a 4 - 3 victory over Manhattanville College Saturday, Nov. 29, in the championship game of the Rutland Herald Invitational Tournament. One of the bright spots this year has been the impressive play of their younger players.
The play of the team’s true freshmen has stood out in particular. The four notable freshmen are forwards Ryan Kangas, Zac Sikich, Dylan Shapiro and defenseman Brian Hurlimann. Between the four, they have 16 points. Kangas leads the way with nine of those 16. There has been a seamless transition from junior play to the college game for these particular players. Not only are they playing but the freshmen are making plays and forcing Head Coach Brian Dickinson to give them added responsibility on special teams. The play of Kangas and Sikich has not gone unnoticed. The two freshmen forwards work extremely hard on the ice, which in turn has earned them a spot on the top line with the team’s leading scorer junior forward Chase Nieuwendyk.
Kangas has nine points on the season which leads all freshmen. Kangas is one of the smartest players on the ice and has great patience with the puck. His positioning has been top notch this year which has resulted in some good offensive numbers. Kangas is able to find the holes on the ice, which is why he is almost always available to his line-mates for a pass. Positioning comes natural to Kangas and he credits most of his offensive production to “being in the right place at the right time this year.”
“Ryan Kangas knows the game extremely well,” Dickinson said. “He’s very patient with the puck he doesn’t panic [...] He’s been a real good fit where ever we have put him. He’s settled in on the power play real nice and has about five power play points this season.”
The recruit who has flown under the radar has been Sikich.
“He’s been a pleasant surprise,” Dickinson said. “We didn’t know much about him coming out of Granite City in Minnesota. He was actually referred to us by an alumni and skating-wise he’s proven that he can play at this level and has just moved himself up from a fourth line type of situation to now playing on our first.”
Sikich plays a feisty game and is always trying to get under the skin of the other team. He has taunted the opposing teams bench trying to get the opposing team off their game. Sikich brings a type of agitator role and some top notch chirps to the Golden Eagles.
Hurlimann has been as steady as they come on the backend. The freshman has had quite a bit of responsibility dropped on him and has not disappointed his team with solid defensive play. Hurlimann rarely gets beaten and the team breaks out of its zone with ease when he is out there. When a defenseman is playing well, you rarely notice him on the ice and this is most definitely the case for Hurlimann. Hurlimann rarely makes the wrong play and puts players around him in a position to succeed on the ice. Something that will continue to develop is Hurlimann’s offensive game.
“He’s been real solid, a big body that likes to control the space in front of the net and he’s done a real good job,” Dickinson said. “Real steady type of hard-nose defenseman and he’s got cannon so we’ve used him on the power play.”
With these four freshmen contributing the way they are now, the future is very bright for the Golden Eagles. As the season goes on, each one of them should continue to improve and Brockport will be a team to be reckoned with in the future.

BROCKPORT HOSTS 2 "MUST WIN" GAMES THIS WEEKEND
As the first semester comes to a close and the
season reaches its halfway point, Brockport hosts two pivotal games this
weekend. SUNYAC foes Buffalo and Fredonia come to town and both are “must win” –
and “can win” -- games for the Golden Eagles.
Brockport currently sits in 8th place in
the conference with a 1-3-1 SUNYAC record, a far cry from the 4th
place that they had been pegged to finish the season in. The team, though, can
make a huge leap in the standings and end up in 4th or 5th
place if they play to the home ice advantage this weekend and continue their
recent success (4-2-1 in their last six).
Buffalo State is a point ahead of Brockport in the
standings and sports an overall record of 1-5-2 (compared to Brockport’s
4-5-1). The Golden Eagles certainly have a score to settle with the Bengals
after getting severely pummeled by them in the playoffs last year – a 7-2 loss
marred by countless odd-man rushes that showed Buffalo State at their very best
offensively. It was only days after
Brockport closed out the regular season by beating them 3-2.
That 3-2 game is what we are more likely to see on
Friday. Graduating last year were the stellar goaltender Kevin Carr (2.57,
.922) and steady playmakers Mike Zannella (7-15-22) and Dan Turgeon (12-15-27),
guys who really got under Brockport’s skin for 4 years.
Goaltending has been by committee this
year with freshman Ian Sylves (.859 and 6.08 in 4 games) and sophomore Mike
DeLaVergne (.891, 3.88 in 5 games). The offense is still finding itself as has
they have scored just 18 goals on the season, led by Anthony Beaumont’s 4
lamplighters and Taylor Price’s 6 assists. Nick Melligan is another fellow to
watch out for – he excels on the power play.
Fredonia comes to town on Saturday, marking the
first time their coach Jeff Meredith coaches against his son Matt, a freshman
forward for Brockport. It will be interesting to see how that pans out.
Fredonia is at the bottom of the standings this year, something atypical for a
Meredith team. They are winless after 6 games.
Their top returning goal scorers coming into the
season were Stephen Castriota (10-10-20) and Jared Wynia (11-5-16). Castriota
has 3 goals on this young season while Wynia still has yet to find the back of
the net – a frustration which could make him dangerous against Brockport. Leading
the team this year is Taylor Bourne (4-5-9). Chris Eiserman sees the most time
in goal (.887, 4.27).
Both games begin at 7:00 PM on their respective
nights.

NIEUWENDYK SCORES SUNYAC HONORS

Men's Ice Hockey team has been selected as the State University of New
York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Hockey Player of the Week for the week
ending on November 30th.
Nieuwendyk was named the Rutland Herald Invitational Tournament MVP after leading The College at Brockport to the championship game victory. During the tournament Nieuwendyk scored three goals and added two assists to help the Golden Eagles to victories over Tufts and Manhattanville.
During the first game against Tufts, Nieuwendyk started the scoring for Brockport five minutes into the second period on a power play goal. Less than one minute later Tufts tied the game at one but Nieuwendyk regained the lead at the 7:48 mark. Nieuwendyk also had an assist on a third period goal that helped Brockport to a 4-2 win.
In the championship game against Manhattanville, Brockport quickly found itself in a two goal deficit. Eleven minutes into the second period the Golden Eagles had a power play and Nieuwendyk was able to connect. Later in the second period Brockport was down by two goals but Nieuwendyk added his second and final assist of the tournament to get the Golden Eagles within one. Brockport defeated Manhattanville 4-3 to capture the championship.
