We may be just a third of the way through the season and he may be just a freshman, but Corey Tam is making a case for the All-SUNYAC team. The blueliner scored his 3rd goal of the season today and leads the 6-1-1 Golden Eagles in +/- with a +11.

National polls on 11/19/18

The weekly polls came out and Brockport's strong play is still attracting some attention.

Brockport picked up a vote in the USCHO.com Top 15 poll, which would have them ranked 26th in the country were USCHO's poll to go that far (last week, they came in at 25th).

D3Hockey.com's Top 15 saw Brockport get 3 votes, which had it been counted would place the Golden Eagles tied for 19th in the nation.

Moore is SUNYAC Goalie of the Week

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has chosen the Men's Ice Hockey athletes of the week. The Goaltender of the Week is Brockport's Jake Moore (Arcade, N.Y. / Springfield Pics.) , the Rookie of the Week is Fredonia's Ethan Kirbis (Clarence, N.Y. / Buffalo Junior Sabres), and the Player of the Week is Geneseo's Conlan Keenan (Penfield, N.Y. / Jersey Hitmen).

Brockport's senior goaltender, Moore, anchored the team to a strong 3-1 win during the week. He made 33 saves and allowed only one goal in their game against Hamilton. Moore is first in the SUNYAC with a .99 goals against average and a .962 save percentage. Brockport is now 4-0-1 with Moore in the net.

Kirbis was clutch for Fredonia during the week, he scored a game-winning goal in both games that the Blue Devils played in. In the first game against No. 3 Oswego, Kirbis delivered the game-winning goal on his only shot of the game to give Fredonia the 3-2 win over their SUNYAC rival. Kirbis had one assist and scored the game-winning goal against Cortland as Fredonia was able to hold the Red Dragons off in the third period to win 5-4.

Conlan Keenan tallied nine points in two games during the week for the Knights as they went 2-0. In the first game Keenan was involved in six out of the nine Geneseo goals, scoring a hat trick and adding three assists. Geneseo went on to beat Morrisville, 9-0. In the second game, also against Morrisville, Keenan scored one goal and added two assists to help Geneseo to a 7-1 win. He currently leads the nation with 19 points and is tied for second with 12 assists.

Some people wonder why I love my Brockport Hockey and NCAA DIII hockey so much. Last night's game against Hamilton was the perfect reason why. It was entertaining. It was exciting. It was memorable.

You knew the game was going to be a good one right after puck drop. For the first seven minutes both teams ran an uptempo coast-to-coast style of play that was unsustainable from a stamina standpoint. It wasn't sustainable, but nonetheless the speed of the game ebbed and flowed and there were countless sessions of this incredibly fast play.

That competitiveness also reared its head in physicality. The "modern" NCAA has been less interested in hitting since rule changes that came out in 2010-2011 (I miss the good ol' days), but it was like a Turn Back the Clock Night as there were plenty of solid checks throughout the affair, enough to keep players and fans on their toes. Among the hardest hits was one inflicted on Doc Gentzler, minutes after his goal. He was hit hard in the open ice, folded back and the offending Hamilton player was penalized for the shot to the head. Let me tell you something: Doc is tough. He didn't go down, he wasn't concussed, he didn't tap out, and on subsequent shifts he didn't have alligator arms or sport any hesitation.

The game also had a few things most will never see.

First came a buzzer beater goal.

Maybe 20 years ago I saw Brockport win a game with one-half of a second left on the clock. Last night, Jordan Renaud scored a goal as the buzzer closed out the second period. His timing was impeccable and, after the linesmen conversed, he was credited with the goal. It was a dramatic moment.

Next, came the rarest of the rare penalties.

In my 26 years watching the game at Tuttle North I had never seen a team whistled for a "hand pass off a faceoff". It happened last night. You never like to see one of your guys charged with a penalty, but I had to chuckle because of the uniqueness of the penalty.

Then, there was an unbelievable save, among many brilliant ones, by Jake Moore. It was one of the craziest saves I've seen in years.

Jake stopped with his leg pads a shot at point blank. Then he stymied the rebound. Then came the third shot. In order to stop it amidst the chaos, Jake sprawled out on his stomach, head in the net. While in that position, the back of his head towards the shooter, he raised his glove hand and made a back-handed glove save. Trying to describe the save doesn't do it justice. You had to be there.

That save highlights Jake's magical season. He now has a 0.99 goals against average and a .962 save percentage. To some, it may seem like he's on a hot streak. I beg to differ. You can tell he's mastered the game. Everything he's doing is right, from positioning to anticipation to limiting shots to making the saves with mechanics and athleticism to playing the puck away from the net. I encourage fans to sit back and enjoy what is shaping up to be the greatest season ever by an individual Brockport player.

As a matter of fact, this season is shaping up to be one of the greatest for the whole team. Last night was a test, and the Golden Eagles passed with flying colors. Last year, Hamilton was the best defensive team in DIII with only 1.68 goals allowed per game. Brockport put 3 on them and beat them at their own game. It was pretty special. Now, after 7 games, Brockport has allowed just 1.57 goals per game. Wild!

The College at Brockport men's ice hockey team defeated Hamilton College Saturday night, by a score of 3-1. With the win, the Golden Eagles move to (5-1-1) on the season and (2-1-1) in the SUNYAC, while the Continentals move to (1-1-0) overall and (1-0-0) in conference.

The two teams skated to a scoreless first period, with the Continentals outshooting the Golden Eagles 9-5. Brockport's penalty kill came up big in the first 20, holding Hamilton to one shot on their powerplay opportunity. The Golden Eagles found themselves on the power play late in the in the first, but the Continentals penalty kill unit was able to keep the Green and Gold at bay.

The Continentals came out firing in the second period, testing Brockport's goalie Jake Moore early and often. The Golden Eagles penalty kill remained solid in the second as they were challenged twice. The Green and Gold netted the first goal of the game with five minutes to go in the second, Doc Gentzler beat the opposition's goalkeeper after a beautiful pass into the slot by Ethan Solat. The Golden Eagles found themselves on the powerplay minutes after their first goal when a high hit by the opposition put Gentzler in a vulnerable position. Brockport capitalized on the opportunity as Jordan Renaud buried his second of the year with assists from Ryan Romeo and Corey Tam. The second goal of the game came with one second remaining in the period, sending the Green and Gold into the locker room with a two-goal lead.

The Golden Eagles came out flying in the third, scoring their third goal  of the game eight minutes into the period when freshman Kyle Collette let an absolute missile go,  beating the oppositions netminder bar down. The Continentals would not let up, however, answering with a goal of their own on a pretty tic-tac-toe play to bring the score within two. The late goal would prove to be too-little-too-late. Moore had another stellar showing making 33 saves on the evening and picking up his fourth win of the year.

Defensive war on tap for Saturday

In this article, the Utica Observer-Dispatch looks at Saturday's opponent -- Hamilton College. It may be a non-conference game, but it's a huge game nonetheless. Hamilton's defense was second in the nation last year, allowing just 1.68 goals per game. That number is surreal. But realize this season Brockport is averaging 1.67 goals allowed. You're talking about two defensive-minded teams that could skate to a 0-0 tie.

On Thursday evening some of the guys went to Hamlin's library where they read books and talked about hockey with the kids. You gotta love the community service and public outreach always undertaken by the team.

Story time with the Golden Eagles

Coach Dickinson and some members of the hockey team will be at the Hamlin Library on Thursday, November 15 from 6:45-7:30pm. They will read a few books, show some hockey gear, and answer questions. Kids and teens will have the opportunity to earn a free ticket to a SUNY Brockport hockey game on January 26th.

Brockport hosts Hamilton Saturday

Brockport has just one game this weekend, but it's a 7:00 PM home game on Saturday, so you can't go wrong with that!

The Golden Eagles will be hosting the Hamilton College Continentals who have yet to play this season. They open their schedule Friday against Amherst. They were a 15-win team last season.

Lucky for Brockport they won't have to face superstar goalie Evan Buitenhuis who graduated last year. He was the 2017 DIII Player of the Year with a .941 save percentage and 1.78 goals against average. Last season he was even better, with a crazy .954 - 1.28 line.

But, that doesn't mean they're out of the woods.

The heir apparent to Buitenhuis, junior Anthony Tirabassi, saw action in half of Hamilton's games last year as Buitenhuis was plagued by injuries. Tirabassi was pretty darn amazing himself, with a .929 save percentage and 1.88 GAA. He will be motivated to play well Saturday night as it's a sort of home game for him -- no doubt friends and family will make the drive from his hometown of Niagara Falls to watch him play.

He will have good help up front in two excellent seniors -- Roy Gagnon who had 15 goals last year and Jason Brochu who had 10. Watch out for junior Nick Ursitti who had 12 goals.

Between the goaltending and firepower, this will be another good test for Brockport. If the Golden Eagles can do the puck-possession thing that they've mastered this season -- minimize shots on our goalie while peppering their goalie with shots -- they'll come out victorious and might make a huge leap in the national rankings.

Saturday's game is worth the price of admission.

Parsons is SUNYAC Rookie of the Week

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announced its weekly honors Tuesday afternoon, and Brockport ice hockey forward Mitchell Parsons was selected as rookie of the week.

Parsons had a big weekend for the Green and Gold, tallying a goal and an assists in Brockport's come from behind win over SUNY Potsdam Friday Night. Parsons has been a key contributor for the Golden Eagles this season as he leads the team in points after six games (3g-3a-6pts). The freshman forward has been paired on a line with Captain Connor Hutchins (2g-4a-6pts) and fellow freshman Jordan Renaud (2g-1a-3pts), the trio has combined for 15 points this season.

Brockport ties Plattsburgh

The College at Brockport men's ice hockey team tied Plattsburgh State Saturday night, by a score of 1-1. With the tie, the Golden Eagles move to (4-1-1) on the season and (2-1-1) in the SUNYAC, while the Cardinals move to (3-0-1) overall and (3-0-1) in conference.

The two teams skated to a scoreless first period, with Plattsburgh outshooting the Golden Eagles 14-8 in the first 20. Brockport's netminder Jake Moore stood tough to all 14 including three shots that came on the powerplay. The Green and Gold took to the PP three times in the first period but the Cardinals penalty killers had all the answers.

The Golden Eagles took the lead eight minutes into the period off a powerplay goal scored by Doc Gentzler with assists to Hunter Laslo and Casey Winn. The Cardinals answered with a goal of their own five minutes later, tying the game at one goal apiece.

Brockport took to the power play a minute into the third period but the Cardinals penalty killers held the Green and Gold to one shot on net. The Cardinals peppered Moore with 14 shots in the final twenty minutes of regulation but he shut the door. Neither team could pull away after 60 minutes, resulting in a five-minute overtime period.

After 65 minutes of hockey, a winner could not be decided, Brockport's goalie Jake Moore finished the night with a 45 save performance and stays unbeaten as a starter.

"I thought the entire team battled hard for 65 minutes," said head coach Brian Dickinson "Jake Moore was phenomenal in goal and kept (Plattsburgh) at bay when we scrambled defensively, It was a great college hockey game."

After picking up his first collegiate goal in a 4-2 win over Potsdam, Jake Colosanti is the Golden Eagles Player of the game.

Brockport declaws Potsdam

The College at Brockport men's ice hockey team defeated SUNY Potsdam Friday night, by a score of 4-2. With the win, the Golden Eagles move to (4-1) on the season and (2-1) in the SUNYAC, while the Bears fall to (3-2) overall and (0-1) in conference.

Potsdam got the best of the Golden Eagles early in this matchup, scoring eleven minutes into the period to take the lead, 1-0. The Bears didn't stop there, tallying their second of the night a minute and a half later to extend their lead by two. The Golden Eagles headed to the locker room down, 2-0.

The second period told a different story for the Green and Gold, as Mitchell Parsons netted his third goal as a Golden Eagle three minutes in with assists from Doc Gentzler and Danny Rock to bring the game within one. Two minutes later, freshman, Jake Colosanti picked up his first in a Brockport sweater on a power play opportunity, with assists from Hunter Laslo and Gentzler. The two teams battled as the period winded down but the Golden Eagles found an opening at 15:08 when Jordan Renaud buried his second goal of the season with assists to Connor Hutchins and Aiden Salerno.

The Golden Eagles put the final nail in the coffin at 8:59 of the third period when captain Connor Hutchins netted a powerplay goal with assists from Ryan Romeo and Parsons, solidifying the win for the Green and Gold, 4-2.

North Country road trip this weekend

With Western New York getting its first real taste of winter this weekend, it’s fitting that the Golden Eagles are heading off on their annual North Country road trip.

The foe they face on Friday is Potsdam. The Bears share a record identical to Brockport’s, 3-1-0 overall. Last Friday’s win was a 3-2 nailbiter with Canton that they took in overtime. A few days earlier, they had a Tuesday affair with Elmira which they lost 3-2. Before that, they beat Saint Michael’s 3-1 (with the third goal being an empty netter). So, they play some really, really tight hockey. That happens when you’ve got great goaltending. Senior Nate Skidmore is like a brick wall and has an incredible .935 save percentage. Brockport likes to pour on the shots, so hopefully volume yields results. Should be an exciting game.

On Saturday Brockport plays Plattsburgh. They are 2-0 after having thoroughly beaten Morrisville twice last weekend. Last year, Brockport and Plattsburgh spilt the season series, continuing the recent success against the Cardinals that came after decades without a win. The player to watch: Plattsburgh's Rich McCartney, who is becoming a DIII superstar. The 5’10” lightning bolt had 17 lamplighters in his freshman campaign. There will NOT be a sophomore slump with this guy. He’s good, and fun to watch. He already has 3 goals with only 2 games under the Cardinal’s belts.

Brockport bedeviled by Fredonia in home opener

The College at Brockport men's ice hockey team fell to Fredonia Saturday night, by a score of 3-1. With the loss, the Golden Eagles move to (3-1) on the season and (1-1) in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Devils improve to (2-1) overall and (1-1) in conference.

The Blue Devils were the first team on the board with five minutes to go in the first but the Golden Eagles dominated the play for the majority of the first 20 minutes. The Golden Eagles outshot the Blue Devils 10-8 in the first period. Fredonia took a five-minute major for boarding with 3:58 remaining in the period, sending the Green and Gold to the powerplay. Brockport couldn't capitalize on the PP chance before time expired, sending them to the locker room down, 1-0.

The Golden Eagles started the second period with a minute and some change left on the PP opportunity. The Green and Gold would waste very little time as Jordan Renaud scored his first collegiate goal 21 seconds into the frame with assists from Ryan Romeo and Mitchell Parsons. The Blue Devils would not be tied for long as they scored their second of the night two minutes later on the power play, taking back the lead, 2-1. The Golden Eagles would go back to the power play at the end of the period but the Fredonia penalty killers stayed strong.

Brockport came out hungry in the third, firing early and often on the Fredonia netminder. While the Golden Eagles outshot the Blue Devils in the third, Fredonia scored their third and final goal of the night with three minutes to go, solidifying the win, 3-1.

Player of the game for 11/2

It's fitting that Jake Moore gets to wear the helmet, because he is on fire. He had a shutout last weekend and last night he held Buffalo State's powerful offense to just one goal.

The College at Brockport men's ice hockey team defeated Buffalo State Friday evening, by a score of 5-1. With the win, the Golden Eagles move to (3-0) on the season and (1-0) in the SUNYAC, while the Bengals drop to (1-2) overall and (0-1) in conference.

The two teams skated to a scoreless first period, with the Bengals having the better of the scoring opportunities. Brockport's senior netminder Jake Moore had a solid showing in the first keeping the Bengals offense at bay.

The Golden Eagles dominated the second period, outshooting the Bengals 15-4. The Green and Gold opened the scoring with 3:45 remaining in the second period, when Danny Rock found an opening, netting his first of the year with the assist from Bryan Carville. Brockport added one more goal to end the period, Captain Connor Hutchins found the back with one minute left in the period, sending the Golden Eagles into the locker room ahead, 2-0.

The Bengals came out with a jump to start the third, scoring just two minutes into the frame to bring the game back within one. The Golden Eagles regained their two-goal lead on a powerplay opportunity 14 minutes later when Captain Hunter Laslo, beat the Bengals goalie for his first of the season with assists from Doc Gentzler and Casey Winn. Brockport added another goal a minute later, this time Ethan Solat solved the Buffalo State netminder, extending the lead to three goals.  The Golden Eagles sealed the deal at 18:08 of the third when Gentzler buried an empty-netter to cap the final score, 5-1.
