BROCKPORT FALLS TO CASTLETON

Junior Ian Finnerty (Ardmore, PA) scored a goal for The College at Brockport Hockey team just four minutes into the contest but Castleton State University responded with five unanswered goals to post a 5-1 victory Sunday over Brockport in the championship game of the Rutland Herald Tournament in Castleton, Vermont.

Freshman goalie Joe Reagan (Yonkers, NY) was named to the All-Tournament team for the Golden Eagles.

“Joe (Reagan) played extremely well this weekend and goaltending was not the problem today,” said head coach Brian Dickinson. “He had a great weekend. It’s not often you see the goalie from the team that did not win the tournament named to the All-Tournament team.”

In the first period, Finnerty gave Brockport (0-9-1) an early lead with his third goal of the season just 4:31 into the game with assists from James Cody (Schwenksville, PA) and Bobby Connor (Lititz, PA).

Three minutes later, Castleton (4-0-0) evened the score with an offensive rush up the ice that was finished with a move to the stick side of Reagan and the teams played with a 1-1 tie until late in the second period.

With less than a minute to play in the second period, Reagan stopped a Castleton shot from the top of the right side faceoff circle but was unable to cover up the rebound and temporarily lost sight of the puck as it squirted loose into the slot and was knocked into the back of the net to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead.

In the third period, Castleton scored twice in the first 6:17 of the period to take a 4-1 lead. The first goal of the period came off a slap shot from the top of the right circle on a power play and the second goal – four minutes later – came from the top of the left circle as the Spartans opened up the lead to a three-goal advantage.

With 6:21 left in the third period, Castleton scored on another power play with a slap shot from the middle of the zone at the blue line for a 5-1 Spartan lead.
