SUNYAC preseason poll

The SUNYAC has released its 2022-23 men's ice hockey preseason poll as voted on by the conference coaches. Geneseo, the 2021 SUNYAC champion, sits at the top of the poll.

The 2022-23 season will kick off with non-conference games on October 28. The first round of the SUNYAC men's ice hockey championship is set for February 22.

Next weekend, Brockport has two exhibition games before heading into the regular season. One of them is really special -- the Golden Eagles will be taking on the EHL's All-Star Team. Yesterday, the league announced the roster for that event:

Wall of Honor is unvelied

This past weekend, Coach Dickinson and Brockport Athletics unveiled the program's new Wall of Honor. It celebrates former Golden Eagle student-athletes, coaches, teams and special contributors whose accomplishments have brought prestige and honor to the ice hockey program.

How golden are Golden Eagles?

Today, October 6th, is the birthday of Michael Gershon, who was an impressive, hard-hitting defenseman for the Golden Eagles. He graduated in 2009. He was a top-notch blueliner who scored a hat trick in 7-2 demolition of Geneseo in 2008 and was awarded Second Team All-SUNYAC honors that same season.

Want to know what kind of year Michael has had?

As the head coach of Team USA’s open hockey team at the 2022 Maccabiah Games this past summer, he led them to GOLD, the first in open hockey for Team USA at the Games, an international Jewish and Israeli multi-sport event held every four years in Israel.

Happy birthday, Michael! And thank you for showing how golden Golden Eagles are!

Cavanaugh joins the Hall of Fame

 

SUNY Brockport will induct its newest members into the Brockport Athletics Hall of Fame during Homecoming Weekend at the Alumni Awards & Hall of Fame Dinner and Ceremony on Friday, October 7 at 6pm, in the Special Events Recreation Center.

Among them is Brian Cavanaugh '76.

Brian Cavanaugh's storied ice hockey career at Brockport has stood the test of time and to this day he is tied for fourth all-time with 124 career points (45 goals-79 assists). His 79 career assists rank third all-time. His 54 points in the 1973-74 season ranks second all-time in a single season at Brockport and his 35 assists in a single season ranks second all-time.

Cavanaugh holds the single game record for most total points with seven and he was the Golden Eagles' MVP three times while holding numerous Brockport scoring records upon graduation.

Cavanaugh went on to serve as Canisius' head hockey coach for 24 seasons and was the first varsity head coach in the school's history. With a 341-306-57 record, Cavanaugh is the winningest coach in program history and led the team with 15 winning seasons. With Cavanaugh at the helm, Canisius was able to elevate the program from Division III to Division I before the 1998-99 season.

Following his coaching career, he was named the Athletic Director at D'Youville from 2006-2019 and went on to become the Executive Director of Athletic Advancement at D'Youville.

Wall of Honor to be unveiled

 The SUNY Brockport men's hockey team will unveil its new Wall of Honor during the Homecoming Weekend on October 8 at 5:15 p.m. in the Wegmans Ice Arena on Campus. 
 
The Wall of Honor unveiling will be part of an exciting weekend for Brockport Hockey. Brockport hockey great Brian Cavanaugh '76 will be inducted into the Brockport Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday night. On Saturday, Hockey Alumni and Friends will host an Open Skate starting at 4pm, followed by the Hockey Wall of Honor unveiling.  Following the unveiling, Brockport will host a hockey alumni & friends Happy Hour.

The SUNY Brockport Ice Hockey Wall of Honor honors former Golden Eagle student-athletes, coaches, teams and special contributors whose accomplishments have brought prestige and honor to the Ice Hockey Program.  All nominees to the Wall of Honor must be outstanding individuals with fine leadership qualities and must be held in high esteem by their colleagues, coaches, and athletes.

Must have been a SUNY Brockport student-athlete for two years
• Athletes are not eligible for nomination until five years after their final season of competition. Must uphold the ideals and philosophies of Brockport Athletics while striving to serve the best interest of intercollegiate athletics.  While winning championships might be a factor, the primary concern is a person's effect upon the student-athletes and fellow coaches he/she has influenced.

• The individual must possess such qualities as sportsmanship, character, and integrity.

Brockport Hockey reunion

Homecoming Weekend is October 7-8, and among the events will be a Brockport Ice Hockey Reunion and Celebration. A few of the highlights:

A new name, a new locker room, and new honors

SUNY Brockport’s ice rink is now known as the Wegmans Ice Arena, following a major gift made by Wegmans Food Markets. The ice arena will undergo branding transformations to reflect the name change. The gift is slated to support the men’s ice hockey program, the facility, and students.

A generous gift from Confer Plastics helped plans of a renovated locker room glide past the goal line. The updated club room will include new lockers, locker naming plates, and a new floor.

Golden Eagle hockey legends will be honored going forward with a Wall of Honor in Wegmans Ice Arena. It will be unveiled during Homecoming and Family Weekend on Saturday, October 8 at 5:15 p.m.
