Brockport ties a tough Oswego team

The SUNY Brockport men's hockey team rallied from a 2-1 second period deficit to earn a key point in the SUNYAC Conference standings as the Golden Eagles skated to a 2-2 tie against visiting Oswego on Saturday night.  The result marked the first time the Golden Eagles have tied the Lakers dating back to 2014.

Brockport is unbeaten in nine of its last ten games and the Golden Eagles moved their record to 13-7-1 overall on the season, including a 6-5-1 ledger in league play.  Brockport is also tied for third in the conference standings with 11 points. Oswego's record moved to 11-8-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the league.

Brockport's Kevin Mainello worked hard to secure possession of the puck behind the net late in the second period and he found a streaking Robert Flannery in front to help the Golden Eagles knot the score at 2-2 with just under one minute to go in the second period.  Flannery's goal was his second of the year and the assist for Mainello was his first collegiate helper.

Brockport goalie Matt Schneider was a rock in net all evening as he turned away 37 shots, just one shy of his career-best.  Oswego finished the night with a 39-24 shot advantage.  Schneider stopped all 19 of the shots he faced in the third period and overtime.  Schneider is now 11-6-1 on the season and needs just one more victory to tie the school-record for career wins.

Brockport's Ethan Solat gave the home team an early advantage as he posted his fifth goal of the season, unassisted, after converting a breakaway opportunity just 4:40 into the contest.

Oswego answered in the first period as Alex DiCarlo scored on the power-play, his eighth of the season, with under three minutes to go in the opening stanza.  Michael Gillespie and Travis Broughman each were credited with an assist on the Lakers' first goal of the contest.

Oswego then took a 2-1 lead early in the second period when Broughman netted his 12th of the year, assisted by Gillespie.

Oswego goalie Steven Kozikoski moved his record to 3-0-1 on the year as he stopped 22 total shots for the visitors.

Brockport will now host its annual First Responders Night on Friday against Fredonia at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles will dawn special edition uniforms throughout the contest as a tribute to first responders. The game worn jerseys will be available for purchase via silent auction from Feb. 7 through Wednesday, February 19th until 12:00 p.m. (EASTERN).  For bidding information please visit gobrockport.com/auction.  Friday is also the program's first Teddy Bear Toss.  Following Brockport's first goal of the game fans will throw stuffed animals out onto the ice for collection and distribution to local charities.
