The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference-- in which DIII powerhouse Gustavus Adolphus plays -- has shaken up intercollegiate hockey by announcing that it will be the first conference in Division III to adopt
the shootout for conference games.
They recently adopted the four-official system, mirroring what happened in the SUNYAC.
That begs the question: Will the SUNYAC copy the MIAC and go with shootouts?
I certainly hope not.
I'm old school with hockey: Shootouts take what was 65 minutes of a team game and total team effort and
transform it into a game decided by a select few individuals each
working independently. If I wanted a mano-a-mano sport, I'd watch tennis or bowling. Let's keep with tradition.
