Five different players scored for The College at Brockport Men's Hockey
team as the Golden Eagles dropped Western New England 5-3 on Saturday
afternoon. Brockport snapped a five-game losing streak with the win and
have now defeated the Golden Bears all six times they have played.
After falling behind 1-0 early on, Brockport scored three first period goals to skate ahead of the Golden Bears. The Golden Eagles added a goal in the second period from Mike Hayward (Toronto, ONT/Vaughan Vipers) and one in the third from Steve Sachman (Medford, NY/New York Bobcats) to take the nonconference victory. Brendon Rothfuss (Webster, NY/Syracuse Stars) and Sachman each had one goal and one assist on the night.
Western New England got on the board first with a goal at the 7:35 mark of the first period. Jeremy DeFazio (Oakville, ONT/Georgetown Raiders) received a pass from Rothfuss on the left side on netted the equalizer. The Golden Bears scored 16 seconds later to regain the lead.
Brockport caused a turnover in the Western New England zone as Rothfuss received a pass in front of the net to score his first goal of the season. Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT/Trenton Golden Hawks) and Marcus Farmer (Caledon, ONT/Brampton Capitals) were credited with the assists.
Mike Hollander (Thornhill, ONT/North York Rangers) netted the third Brockport goal on assists from Sachman and Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY/Buffalo Jr. Sabres). After receiving a pass from Luker, Sachman found Hollander from behind the net to put Brockport up 3-2 after one period of play.
The Golden Eagles carried the one-goal lead midway through the second period until Hayward netted his fourth goal of the season. Luke Colavecchia (Brampton, ONT/North York Rangers) found Hayward from behind the net and the senior captain buried the one-timer. Hayward is tied for the team lead with nine points on the year.
Sachman finished off the Brockport scoring with his fourth goal of the year 1:24 into the third period. The Brockport defense held Western New England scoreless for the final 22:49 to take the win.
Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT/St. Michaels Buzzers) earned his second win of the year as the sophomore stopped 24 shots on the day. Green stopped 10 shots in both the first and third periods to pick up the victory.
Brockport outshot the Golden Bears 35-27 and won 35 face-offs on the day. Brockport killed off all six Western New England power plays, including four in the first period alone.
The Golden Eagles are off for the next month for the holiday break, but Brockport returns to action on the road, taking on Nichols Jan. 11 and Suffolk Jan. 12
