BROCKPORT FALLS TO CASTLETON

The report from the Athletic Department is as follows...

The College at Brockport Hockey team dropped its opening game at the Rutland Herald Invitational Saturday night, falling to host Castleton 3-2 in Rutland, VT. Shane Cavalieri (Richmond Hills, ONT/Toronto Lakeshore Patriots) paced the Golden Eagles with two goals against the Spartans.

Brockport rallied from a one-goal deficit on two separate occasions, once in the first period and again in the second. Castleton scored the final goal of the game with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest and the Golden Eagles were unable to overcome a third deficit.

Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT/St. Michaels Buzzers) stopped a season-high 30 shots in net for the Golden Eagles (3-6-1) in the loss.

Castleton got on the scoreboard first, scoring a goal at the 9:01 mark of the first period. Cavalieri evened the game six minutes later on assists from Jesse Facchini (Mississauga, ONT/Mississauga Chargers) and Matt DeLuca (Skippack, PA/Syracuse Stars). Facchini's seven assists on the season are tied for most among freshman in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).

The Spartans regained the lead just 38 seconds into the second period to go up 2-1. Castleton held the lead for nearly 15 minutes until Cavalieri struck again. Cavalieri received a pass from fellow freshman Chad Cummings (Caledon, ONT/Wellington Dukes) to tie the game at two at the 15:31 mark. Cavalieri has scored a goal in three of the last four games for Brockport.

Both teams were locked in a tie heading into the third period. Castleton netted the game-winner at the 11:36 mark of the final session. The Golden Eagles pulled Green to gain an extra attacker for the final 1:09 but were unable to find the back of net.

Brockport was outshot by the Spartans 34-24 and were 0-2 on the power play. The Golden Eagles did not provide Castleton with any power play opportunities on the night.

The Golden Eagles will take on Tufts University tomorrow on the second day of the Rutland Herald Invitational. The Jumbos lost to Manhattanville 7-0 on Saturday. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
