BROCKPORT BEATS POTSDAM IN OT

The official report on the game from the Athletic Department....

Three freshmen teamed up to score an overtime goal for The College at Brockport Hockey team as the Golden Eagles edged out a 4-3 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over Potsdam on Friday night. Shane Cavalieri (Richmond Hills, ONT/Toronto Lakeshore Patriots) scored the game-winner on assists from Chad Cummings (Caledon, ONT/Wellington Dukes) and James Ryan (Richmond Hills, ONT/Toronto Lakeshore Patriots). The Golden Eagles improve to 3-2 in the SUNYAC with the win.

Brockport tallied one goal in each of the first three periods and held a 3-1 advantage late in the third period before Potsdam scored two quick goals to tie the game. The contest went into overtime where both teams played a back-and-forth battle for the first four minutes of the extra session. Ryan collected a rebound on the left side and fed Cummings at the top of the zone who in turn fired a shot on net. Cavaieri positioned himself in front of the net for the rebound and netted the game-winner, the first of his Brockport career.

The Golden Eagles jump ahead of Potsdam in the SUNYAC standings and are in sole possession of fifth place after an eventful night in SUNYAC play. Geneseo upset No. 4 nationally ranked Plattsburgh while Cortland (2-3) dropped third-place Fredonia (3-3).

Brockport struck first against the Bears as Mike Hayward (Toronto, ONT/Vaughan Vipers) put home a power play goal at the 6:44 mark. Hayward found himself in front of the Potsdam net and deflected a shot into the back of the goal for his second score of the season. Cavalieri and Jesse Facchini (Mississauga, ONT/Mississauga Chargers) were credited with the assists. Facchini, a freshman, leads the Golden Eagles with six assists on the year.

Steve Sachman (Medford, NY/New York Bobcats) put Brockport up 2-0 with six minutes to play in the second period. Sachman has now scored in back-to-back games for the Golden Eagles. Marcus Farmer (Caledon, ONT/Brampton Capitals) and Bobby Conner (Lititz, PA/Philadelphia Junior Flyers) each earned their first assists of the season on the play.

Potsdam responded with its first goal of the game with just under three minutes to play in the second period to cut Brockport's lead in half.

The Golden Eagles hung on to the one-goal lead until Sachman buried his second goal of the game at the 10:21 mark of the third period. Sachman received a pass from Hayward and skated past the blue line into the Bears' zone and beat Potsdam goalie Austin Keiser from the left side. Potsdam responded just two minutes later and tied the game up with six minutes remaining in the game. Neither team was able to convert the game-winner in regulation.

Brockport was able to keep Potsdam out of the shots column in overtime as the Golden Eagles managed five strikes of their own, the final resulting in the game-winner. Cavalieri's goal is the third of the season for the freshman and has scored a goal in three of Brockport's last four games.

Sophomore Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT/Wellington Dukes) got his second start in net for the Golden Eagles and stopped 22 shots, including nine in the third period. Brockport fired off a season-high 56 shots on the night while holding the Bears to just 25 shots on net.

Brockport will take on Plattsburgh tomorrow night at 7:00 pm in the Tuttle North Ice Arena. The Golden Eagles upset the Cardinals, ranked No. 3 nationally at the time, at Tuttle last season, scoring a 4-2 victory on Feb. 10.
