The greatest home games ever

This was my 27th season as a fan of Brockport hockey. I've seen a lot of games.

This past Wednesday's playoff game, even though it was a loss, now sits at #1 on my list of the greatest games that I've been to at Tuttle North. The third home playoff game in program history, double overtime, high drama, the 9th-longest game in DIII history...there was just so much about the game that makes it to the top of the list of classics.

What games round out my Top 5?

#2: February 24th, 2009: Brockport hosted its first playoff game ever. Because it was such a critical moment in the program's history, the drama was intense and the crowd wild. The superstars were super as James Cody had 2 goals and Todd Sheridan made 43 saves in the 3-1 win.

#3: October 7, 2000: This exhibition victory, 9-7 against Ontario's Humber College, featured 96 minutes of penalties, a bloody nose during the post-game handshake, and 5 goals by Nick Smyth...among them a natural shorthanded hat trick.

#4: February 23rd, 2010: Brockport hosted a playoff game for the second year in a row. Potsdam was the opponent yet again and the Golden Eagles shut them out, 3-0.

#5: December 9, 2011: Brockport beat then 6th-ranked Elmira 4-3 in an incredibly exciting game. Goalie Aaron Green, in just his 3rd game, made 30 saves against the high-powered offense. James Cody tied the game with 7 seconds left with an impossible goal from a crouch. Ian Finnerty won the game 58 seconds into overtime...on his birthday.

All-SUNYAC picks

Ryan Romeo and Matt Schneider of the SUNY Brockport men's hockey team were named 2020 SUNYAC Ice Hockey All-Conference in a release by the conference office on Thursday morning.  Romeo was named to the first team as a defender, while Schneider was named to the third team as a goalie.

The Golden Eagles wrapped up their 2019-20 campaign on Wednesday night after a heartbreaking double overtime loss to visiting Plattsburgh in the first round of the SUNYAC Championships.  Brockport was hosting a playoff game for the first time since 2010 after earning the No. 4 seed in the conference championships.  The Golden Eagles capped their season with a 15-10-1 overall record and a 8-7-1 ledger in league play.  Brockport has now won 15 games in each of the last two seasons and they have made the SUNYAC Tournament in six of the last seven seasons.

Romeo is making his second straight all-conference appearance after earning second team honors one year ago.  His selection to the first team marks the first time a Golden Eagle has earned first team status dating back to 2016 when Chase Nieuwendyk was named a first team forward.  Romeo currently ranks seventh in the nation among defensemen with an average of 1.08 points per game. He leads all SUNYAC defenders in scoring with 26 points on 10 goals and 16 assists.  He is also tied for 15th nationally in power play goals with seven.  Romeo now has 50 career points in 70 games played in the green and gold.

Schneider capped his decorated career as the first goalie to earn all-conference honors since Todd Sheridan back in 2010.  He finished as the program's all-time leader with 30 career wins. He also holds the school-record for career goals against average with a 2.80 in 64 games played.  He finished the season with a 13-9-1 record and 551 saves, good for a .900 save percentage and a 2.64 goals against average.

Senior spotlight: Matt Schneider

Matt Schneider's NCAA career came to an end this week after 4 years of excellence that saw him become the program's all-time leader in career wins (30) and single season wins (13). His final stats are a .898 save percentage, a 2.80 GAA, a 30-28-2 record and 4 shutouts. He played big in so many games and was unflappable.

To me, his two major highlights were...

1) His freshman year shutout of Plattsburgh at Plattsburgh. That took a burden off the program's shoulders and forever changed how Brockport views a once-unbeatable Cardinals team.

2) The double-overtime loss to Plattsburgh earlier this week. His effort in net was absolutely incredible with so many amazing saves under the most intense pressure imaginable in one of the longest games in NCAA DIII history.

Both of those games are on the short list of all-time games for the Brockport program and there he was in goal for both -- focused and brilliant.

All-SUNYAC Teams

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced the 2020 Men's Ice Hockey All-Conference teams as nominated and voted on by the conference coaches. Two Golden Eagles made the list. On the First Team is defenseman Ryan Romeo. On the Third Team is goalie Matt Schneider.

Senior spotlight: Connor Hutchins

Connor Hutchins NCAA career ended last night with a 34-63-97 line. He might have been just short of 100 points, the century mark, a sort of statistical milestone, but that doesn't diminish what he accomplished in his 4 years here. He's 15th all-time at Brockport in points.15th! Think of all the young men who've gone through the program which, as a varsity program, dates back to the 1973-1974 season. There he is, among the very best. It's been a treat to watch him produce and be a leader these past four years.

P-R report on last night's game

Thank you

Kudos to the team for a great game that capped off a great season. Despite the loss, there's a lot to take pride in on the ice and in the classroom in the 2019-2020 season. Thank you for the exciting season and for making Brockport fans everywhere proud.

Brockport falls in 9th-longest game in DIII history

The SUNY Brockport men's hockey team hosted Plattsburgh Wednesday night for the First Round of the SUNYAC Championship Tournament. The Cardinals pulled out a 3-2 win in double-overtime, advancing to the SUNYAC Semi-Finals against Oswego.

Plattsburgh drew first blood with a goal in the first period, going up 1-0 with 7:32 remaining in the first. The visiting Cardinals would score a second unanswered goal at 10:33 in the second period, taking a 2-0 lead. Doc Gentzler put Brockport on the board with a goal in the second, with assists coming from Corey Tam and Jordan Renaud. The Green and Gold trailed Plattsburgh 2-1 heading into the final period.

Neither team gave an inch throughout the third, as Brockport remained down one goal for most of the period. With just 1:08 left in regulation, Connor Hutchins won a face-off in the attacking zone. Anthony Hora took the puck and touched it over to Jordan Renaud who fired a shot that ricocheted off a defender's skate and into the back of the net. Renaud tied the game up at 2-2 with just over a minute left, sending the postseason contest into overtime.

After a full 20 minutes in the first overtime period, neither team was able to notch the game-winning goal. Brockport and Plattsburgh headed into a second 20-minute overtime period at the Tuttle North Ice Arena. The Cardinals took advantage on the power play mid-way through the second overtime period, with a rocket slapshot from Matt Araujo to earn the 3-2 win.

Matt Schneider was fantastic between the pipes all night for the Green and Gold, recording a career-high 41 saves in the final game of his career. Schneider made a number of incredible saves throughout the contest, and totaled 15 stops in the two overtime periods. He ends his time here at Brockport as the program's all-time leader in wins.

The Golden Eagles finish the season 15-10-1 overall, matching its 15-win total from last season. The team put together a seven-game win streak during the season, setting a new program-record for longest win streak. An 8-7-1 mark in SUNYAC play set a new program best for conference competition, as Brockport has now made the SUNYAC Tournament in six of the last seven seasons. Wednesday night's SUNYAC Tournament game was the first time the Green and Gold hosted a postseason match since 2010.

Tickets: All SUNYAC students will receive FREE admission with ID.  Tickets will be $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12.  Children 4 & under are free.  Tickets can be purchased at the entrance to the rink accessible through the SERC.

Follow the Action: Wednesday's first round match up can be viewed online at www.gobrockport.com/watch and live stats will be accessible at https://gobrockport.com/sidearmstats/mhockey/summary.  Brockport's student radio 89.1 The Point will broadcast the event over the radio airwaves and online at https://www.891thepoint.com/.

SUNYAC Tournament History: The last time Brockport hosted a SUNYAC Tournament game was back in 2010 when the Golden Eagles topped Potsdam State 3-0 in first round action.  Brockport has made the conference tournament in six of the last seven seasons.  The last time Brockport advanced out of the quarterfinals came by way of a 6-4 victory on the road at Geneseo in 2015.  Brockport last met Plattsburgh in the conference tournament last season and the Cardinals came away with 4-1 victory on their home ice.

Strong Second Half: Brockport began the new year on a seven game winning streak and they posted a 10-3-1 record in the second half of the season.  SUNYAC wins over Plattsburgh, Buffalo State, Cortland and a tie against Oswego down the stretch helped the Golden Eagles earn a third place tie in the conference standings at the end of regular season play.

Overall Record: Brockport won 15 games for the second straight season and currently holds a 15-9-1 record overall.  The Golden Eagles went 8-7-1 in SUNYAC play, marking their most wins in conference play on record.

Against Plattsburgh: Brockport swept Plattsburgh in a pair of conference games this season for the second time in the last four years.  Brockport downed Plattsburgh on the road in the regular season opener by the score of 3-1.  The Golden Eagles completed the regular season sweep on their home ice in January as they earned a 4-1 victory over the Cardinals.

All-American Candidate: Junior defender Ryan Romeo ranks fourth nationally among defensemen with an average of 1.13 points per contest. He leads the team with 26 total points on 10 goals and 16 assists.  His average of .30 power-play goals per game is tied for 14th nationally.

Seniors Leading the Way: Senior captain Connor Hutchins has played in all 25 games this season and ranks second on the team with 21 points.  In 101 career games played he has 96 total points on 34 goals and 62 assists.  Senior forward Doc Gentzler has 20 points this season on six goals and 14 assists.  In 97 career games played he has 22 goals and 30 assists in the green and gold.

Double Digit Scorers:  Brockport has a variety of offensive weapons to turn to with 10 skaters registering 10 or more points this season.  Sophomore forward Jordan Renaud has 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists).  His three game-winners this season lead the team.  Brother's Jeremy Solat and Ethan Solat each have 15 points in 24 games played, while Anthony Hora and Danny Rock have 14 points apiece.  Jake Colosanti and Corey Tam round out the double-digits scorers for the Golden Eagles with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Our Goalie: Senior goalie Matt Schneider recently broke the program record with 30 career victories and his 13 wins this season are just one shy of tying the program's single season record.  He also needs just one shutout to tie the program-record for career shutouts originally set by Jake Moore '19.  Schneider has 510 saves this season to go along with a .898 save percentage, a 2.68 goals against average and two shut outs.

Fundraiser for Leah Gates

Rick Gates was a forward for the Golden Eagles from the 2004-2005 season through the 2007-2008 campaign. He had a memorable freshman season with 5 goals, 10 assists and 47 penalty minutes...that last stat highlighting his physical style of play.

Now, Rick is facing a different kind of fight as his wife Leah was diagnosed with Leukemia last year at age 37.

Leah's friend has opened a GoFundMe for the Gates family as Leah's medical bills continue to accumulate with all the medical expenses, chemotherapy and the inability to work.

Can Brockport make history against Plattsburgh?

Tomorrow, the Golden Eagles host Plattsburgh in a playoff game.

Let's put this into historical perspective for young Brockport fans.

Our seniors are the only Golden Eagles class who've known nothing but success against the Cardinals.

Previously, Brockport was owned by Plattsburgh whom they play twice a year. In a series that dates back to 1975-76, the Cardinals are 82-8-5 all-time against the Golden Eagles.

Brockport did not secure a single win against Plattsburgh from the 1982-1983 season until the 2011-2012 season. Almost 30 years!

Brockport wouldn't win again until the 2016-2017 season when now senior goalie Matt Schneider broke the curse by shutting out the Cardinals at Plattsburgh, a tough place to play. Later that season, Brockport won 8-4 at home.

In 2017-2018 the team split the series. In 2018-2019 Brockport lost one and tied the other. This season, Brockport beat Plattsburgh twice.

So, Wednesday is a big hockey moment -- the biggest for these young men and one of the biggest for long-time fans like me (27 seasons and counting)...

Can Schneider and his fellow seniors (Pollini, Salerno, Gentzler, Laslo, and Hutchins) finish what they started and put the Plattsburgh mystique and dominance behind us, once and for all?

If they do, literally decades of Brockport players, alumni and fans will celebrate like they never have.

Barbagallo commits to Brockport

Cam Barbagallo, a defenseman for the New Hampshire Avalanche, has committed to SUNY Brockport for the fall of 2020.

The '99 native of Peabody, MA, joined the team in late January, and in nine Eastern Hockey League (EHL) games since, he's notched a pair of goals and a pair of assists to his name.

"Cam came to us late after leaving the NCDC and he fit right in to our culture and locker room," said Avalanche head coach and general manager Chris Cerrella. "He was a great addition and I am excited about his future in college hockey. I think he will be a great addition to the SUNY Brockport community both on and off the ice. I am proud of Cam and look forward to following him in the SUNYAC."

Barbagallo will be part if an incoming freshmen class that includes six players from the EHL. Of those six players, the Avalanche now account for half of the commits, as Barbagallo will reunite with Jake Mendeszoon and Tim Cronin in western New York this fall. Barbagallo is very excited for the future and also gracious for the chance to join the Avalanche when he did.

"I would like to thank everyone in the Avalanche organization for everything they’ve done for me from the moment I arrived here," said Barbagallo. "Coach Cerrella especially has been behind me since day one. I would also like to thank my parents and two sisters for being by my side throughout this process. I can’t thank my teammates enough on the Avs, for welcoming me and showing me the way right from the beginning. I couldn’t be happier to be joining the Brockport family this upcoming fall. I loved the campus and the business program is top-notch, it’s a perfect spot for me."

Barbagallo's top highlight to date came on February 8th against the Walpole Express, when he scored in three out of the four shootout attempts he took, leading his team to victory. Barbagallo and the Avalanche have just three regular season games remaining, as they continue to make their push for a First Round bye in the upcoming EHL Playoffs.

Brockport loses to Geneseo in regular season finale

The SUNY Brockport men's hockey team fought hard in a gritty 6-4 loss against nationally-ranked No.2 SUNY Geneseo in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday night at the Tuttle North Ice Arena.  Brockport's Ethan Solat totaled a team-high two goals and added one assist while Connor Hutchins chipped in with two helpers for the Golden Eagles.

Brockport (15-9-1, 8-7-1 SUNYAC) has clinched home ice for a first round playoff game on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. after totaling 17 league points and a third place tie with Buffalo State in the regular season conference standings.  Geneseo (20-3-2, 13-1-2 SUNYAC) has clinched the top seed and a first round bye in the SUNYAC Championships.

The Golden Eagles fell into an early 4-0 hole in the first 20 minutes of action.  Gordie Helmuth got the Knights on the board in the first period at the 6:11 marker.  Less than a minute later, Chris Perna netted his sixth of the season to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.  Tyson Gilmour then found the back of the net twice to push the Knight's lead to 4-0 at the conclusion of the first period.

Brockport's comeback bid began at the 6:49 mark of the second period when Ethan Solat netted his first of two goals off an assist from Doc Gentzler to make it a 4-1 contest.

Geneseo would add two more second period goals to take a commanding 6-1 lead at the 17:47 mark of the second period.  However, Brockport would not go down without a fight and Jeremy Solat found the back of the net for his eighth goal of the season with 31 seconds left in the second period to begin the Golden Eagles' late surge.  Ethan Solat and Connor Hutchins were each credited with an assist on the goal that made the score 6-2.  Hutchins now has 96 career points in the Green and Gold.

Brockport added two more third period goals to make it interesting.  Jake Colosanti registered his 10th goal of the year off assists from Hunter Laslo and Jordan Renaud at 13:35 of the third period to cut Brockport's deficit in half, 6-3.

Ethan Solat then netted his second of the night at 14:41 to make the score 6-4.  Hutchins' assisted on what would be Brockport's final goal of the contest.

Matt Schneider stopped 35 shots in net for the Golden Eagles as his record moved to 13-8-1 overall on the season.  He is just one win shy of tying the program record for wins in a single season.  Aaron MacKay stopped 15 shots in net for Geneseo.

The Knights outshot the Golden Eagles 41-19 on the day and they also went 2-for-8 on the power-play.

Schneider owns the SUNYAC

It doesn't matter what team you play for and what conference it plays in. Nine-times-out-of-ten, a goalie's numbers will always be better, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot, in non-conference games.

Well, we've got one of the rare one-time-out-of-ten scenarios on our hands this season...big time.

Consider this split:

Matt Schneider has a .869 save percentage and 3.15 goals against average in 6 non-conference games this season.

In 15 SUNYAC games he has a .913 save percentage and 2.28 GAA.

Wow!

He's dramatically better in the more difficult, high-pressure, do-or-die games in our conference.

That's clutch, seriously clutch.

THAT should give you some major confidence in a deep playoff run. He's the sort of performer you want on your team!

Reliving playoff history

I've been watching Brockport Hockey for 27 seasons. Next Wednesday will be only the third time, and the first since 2010, that Brockport has hosted a playoff game over that time. I'm really looking forward to experiencing playoff hockey again at Tuttle North ice arena!

If you'd like to relive the past, here are my recaps of the playoff games of yore...

What memories!

New memories will be made next week!

Brockport beats Cortland

The SUNY Brockport men's hockey team secured its first home playoff game since 2010 and senior goalie Matt Schneider set a new program-record for career wins (30) following a 3-2 win on the road at SUNY Cortland on Tuesday night.

Schneider stopped 22 shots and Danny Rock added one goal and one assist as the Golden Eagles picked up their 15th win of the season for the second straight year.  Brockport's record moved to 15-8-1 overall and 8-6-1 in SUNYAC play.  The Golden Eagles are now unbeaten in 11 of their last 13 contests.  Cortland's record moved to 12-10-1 and 5-9-0 in SUNYAC play as the Golden Eagles completed the regular season sweep of the Red Dragons.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the first 30:51 of action.  Rock got the visitors on the board first when he netted his third of the year off assists from Chris Pollini and Mitchell Parsons at the 14:13 marker of the first period.

Brockport added two more goals in the first 10:51 of the second period to push its lead to three goals. Jake Colosanti netted his ninth of the year at the 9:41 ledger, just 1:10 before Doc Gentzler registered his sixth goal of the year.  Hunter Laslo and Jordan Renaud each tallied an assist on Colosanti's goal.  Renaud now has 11 helpers this season.  Pollini picked up his second assist of the night on Gentzler's goal, while Rock added his second point of the evening and 11th assist of the season.

Cortland threatened with two third period goals to make it s a 3-2 contest.  Conor Tierney made it 3-1 at the 3:27 marker of the third period. Cortland's Luca Esposito then added the home team's second goal of the night with just 38 seconds left in regulation, but the comeback bid proved to be too late as the Golden Eagles locked up the key conference victory and a home playoff contest as they now have 17 league points.

Brockport earned a 32-24 shot advantage on the afternoon. Cortland's Nick Modica stopped 29 shots in net for the Red Dragons.

Schneider is SUNYAC Goalie of the Week

Brockport's Matt Schneider has been named the SUNYAC Men's Ice Hockey Goalie of the Week, in a release by the conference office on Monday.

Schneider recorded a shutout as he led the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 win on the road at Buffalo State Saturday night, as Brockport clinched a spot in the upcoming SUNYAC Conference Tournament. Schneider made 22 saves and the senior tied the program-record for career wins as he picked up his 29th victory over the course of the last 4 seasons. He needs just one more win to earn sole possession of the record while becoming the first goalie in program-history to reach 30 career victories.

Brockport beats Buffalo State

The SUNY Brockport men's hockey team clinched a spot in the upcoming SUNYAC Conference Tournament with a solid 2-0 win on the road at Buffalo State Saturday night.  Senior goalie Matt Schneider made 22 saves and tied the program-record for career wins as he picked up his 29th victory over the course of the last four seasons.  He now needs one more win to earn sole possession of the record while becoming the first goalie in program-history with 30 career victories.

Brockport's 14 wins this season are just one shy of last year's total. The Golden Eagles are now 14-8-1 overall and 7-6-1 in conference play and they will be making their second straight trip to the SUNYAC's.

Ryan Romeo got the Golden Eagles on the board early when he netted his tenth goal of the season at the 14:46 marker of the first period on the power-play.  Romeo's power-play goal was assisted by freshman Anthony Hora and senior Connor Hutchins. Hutchins now has 14 assists this season and 94 career points.

Brockport's Jeremy Solat then netted his second in as many nights off an assist from his brother Ethan Solat to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 advantage just 1:23 into the third and final period of play.

Schneider stood strong through the third period and held the Bengals off the board to pick up his 12th win of the year. He needs just two more wins this season to tie the program record for wins in a single season.  Schneider now has four career shut outs to his credit.

Brockport returns to the ice on the road at Cortland Tuesday night when they take on the Red Dragons at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles return home for the regular season finale on Saturday as they host Geneseo at 7 p.m.

Brockport upset by Fredonia on big night

The SUNY Brockport men's hockey team rallied with two third period goals, but it was not enough to overcome an early 5-0 deficit as the Golden Eagles lost for just the second time in their last 11 games on Friday night against Fredonia.  The contest was part of the Golden Eagles Teddy Bear Toss & First Responders Night.  Following Brockport's first goal the Golden Eagle faithful launched hundreds of stuffed animals out onto the ice for collection and distribution to children in need at the Bivonia Child Advocacy Center.

Brockport also hosted First Responders Night and dawned special edition uniforms in honor of local law enforcement.  Brockport Police Chief Mark Cuzzupoli, University Police Chief Daniel Vasile and our honored guest Rochester Police Officer Denny Wright performed the ceremonial puck drop prior to the start of the contest.  Brockport is auctioning off its special edition uniforms until Wednesday at 12 p.m., with all proceeds benefitting Officer Wright.  For more information about the jersey auction please visit www.gobrockport.com/auction.

Brockport's record moved to 13-8-1 overall and 6-6-1 in SUNYAC play, while Fredonia improved to 6-9-7 overall and 3-7-3 in league play. Doc Gentzler finished the night with one goal and one assist to lead the way for the Golden Eagles.

The home team earned a heavy shot advantage on the evening (39-21) but they could only capitalize on one of eight power-play chances in the loss.

Fredonia's Jacob Haynes led the way for the Blue Devils as he posted three points on one goal and three assists.  Both of Haynes' goals came short-handed for the visitors.

Fredonia led 3-0 through two full periods of play behind goals from Ethan Kirbis, Haynes and Bryce Witman.  Haynes then added an early third period goal and Antonio Demacopoulos capped the Fredonia scoring as he posted his third goal of the season to hand the visitors a convincing 5-0 lead midway through the third period.

Jeremy Solat got the Golden Eagles on the board with this sixth of the year at the 10:08 marker of the third period. His goal was assisted by Doc Gentzler and Ryan Romeo.

Gentzler then added his fifth goal of the season with just 19 seconds left in the contest to make the score 5-2. Connor Hutchins and Anthony Hora were each credited with an assist on the final goal of the contest.

Fredonia goalie Anton Rosen stopped 37 shots on the evening to pick up second star honors for the visitors.  Brockport's Matt Schneider made 15 saves.

Goaltender Matt Schneider was outstanding in net, coming up with 37 saves in the game which was just one shy of his career-high.

SUNYAC Picture: With a record of 6-5-1 in conference, the Green and Gold sit in fourth place in the standings with 13 points. Geneseo and Oswego were the first two teams to clinch a postseason berth, sitting in the two tops spots ahead of the weekend. Brockport is just two points behind Buffalo State in the standings and only one point ahead of Potsdam. With just four games left in the regular season, the team will be fighting each night for a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament.

Fredonia Matchup: This will be the second meeting between these two teams, as Brockport looks to sweep the season series against Fredonia. The last game resulted in a 4-3 victory on the road for the Green and Gold, thanks to some late game heroics. Entering the third period tied at 3-3, Jordan Renaud found the back of the net late in the contest to lift the team to a road win. The Blue Devils are 1-1-3 in their last five games, which puts them at 5-9-7 overall and 2-7-3 in SUNYAC play.

Buffalo State Matchup: This will be the third time Brockport has faced the Bengals this season and is looking for its first win against this conference opponent. Buffalo State sits just one spot above the Green and Gold in the SUNYAC Standings, holding a two-point edge for third. The Bengals are 11-8-2 overall and 7-4-1 in the conference, with a matchup against Geneseo on Friday. With a win over Fredonia and Buffalo State, the Golden Eagles can jump into the third spot in the conference standings.

Up Next: The Golden Eagles will travel for its next game on Tuesday, February 18th for its rescheduled contest with Cortland that was previously postponed due to the weather. This SUNYAC battle will begin at 6 pm.

Brockport ties a tough Oswego team

The SUNY Brockport men's hockey team rallied from a 2-1 second period deficit to earn a key point in the SUNYAC Conference standings as the Golden Eagles skated to a 2-2 tie against visiting Oswego on Saturday night.  The result marked the first time the Golden Eagles have tied the Lakers dating back to 2014.

Brockport is unbeaten in nine of its last ten games and the Golden Eagles moved their record to 13-7-1 overall on the season, including a 6-5-1 ledger in league play.  Brockport is also tied for third in the conference standings with 11 points. Oswego's record moved to 11-8-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the league.

Brockport's Kevin Mainello worked hard to secure possession of the puck behind the net late in the second period and he found a streaking Robert Flannery in front to help the Golden Eagles knot the score at 2-2 with just under one minute to go in the second period.  Flannery's goal was his second of the year and the assist for Mainello was his first collegiate helper.

Brockport goalie Matt Schneider was a rock in net all evening as he turned away 37 shots, just one shy of his career-best.  Oswego finished the night with a 39-24 shot advantage.  Schneider stopped all 19 of the shots he faced in the third period and overtime.  Schneider is now 11-6-1 on the season and needs just one more victory to tie the school-record for career wins.

Brockport's Ethan Solat gave the home team an early advantage as he posted his fifth goal of the season, unassisted, after converting a breakaway opportunity just 4:40 into the contest.

Oswego answered in the first period as Alex DiCarlo scored on the power-play, his eighth of the season, with under three minutes to go in the opening stanza.  Michael Gillespie and Travis Broughman each were credited with an assist on the Lakers' first goal of the contest.

Oswego then took a 2-1 lead early in the second period when Broughman netted his 12th of the year, assisted by Gillespie.

Oswego goalie Steven Kozikoski moved his record to 3-0-1 on the year as he stopped 22 total shots for the visitors.

Brockport will now host its annual First Responders Night on Friday against Fredonia at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles will dawn special edition uniforms throughout the contest as a tribute to first responders. The game worn jerseys will be available for purchase via silent auction from Feb. 7 through Wednesday, February 19th until 12:00 p.m. (EASTERN).  For bidding information please visit gobrockport.com/auction.  Friday is also the program's first Teddy Bear Toss.  Following Brockport's first goal of the game fans will throw stuffed animals out onto the ice for collection and distribution to local charities.

Teddy Bear Toss

Cortland and Oswego coming up

The SUNY Brockport hockey team has two games this weekend with a road game against Cortland on Friday before coming home to face Oswego Saturday. Friday's game starts at 7 pm, while Saturday's puck drop is scheduled for 4 pm.

Bounce Back Win: The Golden Eagles got back in the win column over the weekend with a 4-2 victory over Bryn Athyn on the road. They have now won eight of their last nine contests, holding a record of 13-7 overall and 6-5 in SUNYAC play.

Receiving Votes: In the latest USCHO.com Division III national poll, Brockport was recognized in the receiving votes category. The national poll was released by the highly popular college hockey website in the afternoon on Monday, February 3rd. Geneseo, currently ranked third in the nation, is the only other SUNYAC school getting national recognition in the poll.

Schneider's Net: Senior goalie Matt Schneider has 11 wins this season to go along with 279 saves and a 2.58 goals against average.  He has 28 career victories to his credit and needs just one more to tie the College's all-time wins record for a goalie, originally set back in 2010 by Todd Sheridan.  He also needs three more wins this season to tie the program record for most wins by a goalie in a single season.

Romeo's Impact: All-American candidate Ryan Romeo leads the team and ranks third nationally among defenders with an average of 1.20 points per game.  He now has 24 points on nine goals and 15 assists for the Golden Eagles. Romeo is also tied for 13th nationally with six power-play goals this season.

SUNYAC Picture: With a record of 6-5 against conference opponents, the Green and Gold currently sit in fourth place in the SUNYAC with 12 points. The team is just one point behind the third place Bengals from Buffalo State. Geneseo is in first place with 18 points on a 8-1-2 record in the league, while Oswego's 8-2-0 conference mark has the team in second with 16 points. With the non-conference schedule over, each game for the remainder of the season will impact seeding for the SUNYAC Tournament.

Scouting Cortland: The Red Dragons are holding a 10-8-1 overall record and are 5-7 in SUNYAC play. Cortland most recently defeated Plattsburgh in a tight 5-4 meeting on the road. Despite the team being below .500 in conference play, Cortland has had big wins this season including a shootout win over the top team in the country, Norwich. Brockport defeated its SUNYAC foe the last time the two teams faced off, 2-1.

Scouting Oswego: The Lakers are the winners of three straight games heading into the weekend where they will play Geneseo on Friday before coming to Brockport on Saturday. With a record of 11-8 overall and 8-2 in the SUNYAC, Oswego is currently ahead of the Green and Gold in the conference standings. The team most recently defeated both Plattsburgh and Potsdam by a combined score of 9-3. Oswego beat Brockport, 4-1, earlier in the season when the teams first met.

Teddy Bear Toss: The Golden Eagles will be hosting their First Annual Teddy Bear Toss & First Responders Night on Friday, February 14th. Fans are being asked to bring a stuffed animal to the game and throw it onto the ice following Brockport's first goal of the game. The toys are to be donated to the Bivonia Child Abuse Center in Rochester. The matchup against Fredonia is scheduled to start at 7 pm at the Tuttle North Ice Arena.

SUNYAC standings

Matt Schneider lives up to his early billing

With his next win, goalie Matt Schneider will tie Todd Sheridan for the program's lead in career wins. It's hard to believe this clutch performer's career is nearing its end. Looking back through old posts, I found this assessment of Matt's freshman campaign....

Matt Schneider has entered into folk hero status in the hockey program. Like a modern day Paul Revere or Johnny Appleseed, he’ll always be known as “the guy who shutout the Cardinals at Plattsburgh.” That wasn’t the only highlight of a nice rookie campaign that also saw him get a .903 save percentage and a 3.02 goals against average while securing the pressure cooker “must-wins” that closed out the regular season.

Brockport receiving votes

The SUNY Brockport hockey team moved into the receiving votes category of the USHCO.com Division III national poll released by the highly popular college hockey website on Monday afternoon.

Brockport has now won eight of its last nine contests and currently holds a 13-7 overall record.  The Golden Eagles are 6-5 in the conference heading into a key weekend that features a road game on Friday at Cortland, before returning home to host Oswego on Saturday (4 p.m.).

All-American candidate Ryan Romeo leads the team and ranks third nationally among defenders with an average of 1.20 points per game.  He now has 24 points on nine goals and 15 assists for the Golden Eagles. Romeo is also tied for 13th nationally with six power-play goals this season.

Senior goalie Matt Schneider has 11 wins this season to go along with 279 saves and a 2.58 goals against average.  He has 28 career victories to his credit and needs just one more to tie the College's all-time wins record for a goalie, originally set back in 2010 by Todd Sheridan.  He also need three more wins this season to tie the program record for most wins by a goalie in a single season.

Jordan Renaud and Connor Hutchins are tied for second on the team with 17 points this season.  Renaud has seven goals and 10 assists, while Hutchins has five goals and 12 assists.  Renauds three game-winning goals this season lead the team.  Hutchins needs just eight more points this season to reach 100 for his career.

First Responders Night

Rochester Police Officer Denny Wright was seriously wounded in a brutal stabbing in October. The Golden Eagles will be holding a special jersey auction and raffle, showing their love for Denny and other first responders at their Valentine's Day match-up with Fredonia.

Brockport beats Bryn Athyn

The SUNY Brockport ice hockey team got back in the win column on Saturday with a road victory over Bryn Athyn, 4-2. Brockport is now 13-7 overall and 6-5 in conference play.

The Golden Eagles took advantage of its power play opportunities in the first period with two power play goals in the opening period. Connor Hutchins got them on the board first with assists coming from Ryan Romeo and Jordan Renaud. The second Brockport goal was scored by Romeo less than two minutes later, assisted by Anthony Hora and Danny Rock. The team held a 2-0 lead heading into the second.

Early on in the second period Bryn Athyn finally got on the scoreboard to make the score read 2-1 after a power play goal of its own. The Green and Gold would answer back in a big way with two more goals to close out the period. Kevin Mainello and Robert Flannery both netted their first goals of the season to give the team a 4-1 lead heading into the final period. Shane Visnick and Scott Ramaekers both were credited with an assist.

Although Bryn Athyn found the back of the net for a second time early on in the third, Brockport held on for the 4-2 win. Senior goaltender Matt Schneider came up with 25 saves in the game, picking up the win in net.
