GREEN IS BROCKPORT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Senior Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT) has been named The College at Brockport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending December 8. Green has sparked a four game win streak for Brockport’s Ice Hockey team.

This past weekend in crucial play against State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opponents Green led Brockport to two victories posting two shutouts. The two consecutive shutout victories is the first time in school history since the varsity hockey program started in 1973.

In Brockport’s 3-0 win against Buffalo State Friday night, Green stopped 33 shots from the Bengals. Buffalo State put lots of pressure on Brockport in the second period but Green would not succumb to the pressure making 19 saves altogether in the second. The Bengals had a two man advantage late in the third period as they pulled their goalie and were on a power play, but Green proved up to the task making four saves when the power play expired.

Green finished with 22 saves against Fredonia Saturday evening, leading Brockport to a 3-0 victory. He has a scoreless streak of nearly 160 minutes, dating back to the second period of Brockport’s victory against Manhattanville in the title game of the Rutland Herald Tournament over Thanksgiving weekend.

TWO NIGHTS. TWO OPPONENTS. TWO SHUTOUTS

Senior Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT) did it again making 22 saves as The College at Brockport won a 3-0 victory over Fredonia Saturday night in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game at the Tuttle North Ice Arena in Brockport. No other Brockport team was able to win back-to-back games with shutout wins since varsity hockey started at Brockport in 1973.

Brockport (6-5-1 Overall, 3-3-1 SUNYAC) won for the fourth consecutive game and have lost just once min the past seven games (5-1-1). The closest the Golden Eagles have ever come to consecutive shutouts was back in 1973-74 when Brockport won a 9-0 victory over St. John Fisher. The game prior to that, Brockport won 11-1 over Rutgers and the game following St. John Fisher, Brockport won 9-1 over Canisius.

After two scoreless periods Saturday, Aidan Verbeke (Elmwood Park, IL) scored his second goal in as many nights 4:38 into the final period to break the tie.

Jake Taylor
(Port Perry, ONT) fired a shot from the right of the slot area that was deflected by a diving Fredonia (1-5-3, 0-4-2) defender and Verbeke found himself with the puck on the door step with a wide open half of the net and slapped home the first goal of the game.

The score remained 1-0 until late in the period when Brockport broke into the Fredonia zone with Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT) sending a quick pass to Zac Sikich (Oak Park, CA) who then threaded a perfect pass to Ryan Kangas (Williamstown, MA) for the quick shot into the back of the goal for the 2-0 lead.

Fredonia called a time out and tried to narrow the gap by pulling its goalie for the extra attacker but a turnover in the Brockport zone led to an empty net for the 3-0 Brockport lead with 26 seconds to play.

Green finished with 22 saves and has a streak of nearly 160 consecutive scoreless minutes dating back to the second period of the Manhattanville game.

PUTTING GREEN'S CAREER INTO PERSPECTIVE

Last night Aaron Green secured a shutout for the Golden Eagles, the first for the team in almost 5 years. It's a nice accomplishment for Green, who has quietly put together one of the finest careers of any Brockport goaltender. Consider these numbers:

* First all-time in winning percentage: .562
* Second all-time in wins: 18
* Second all-time in goals against average: 3.21

He's certain to add to those numbers as he concludes this senior year sharing time in goal with Jared Lockhurst and having a solid Golden Eagles squad ahead of him.

Take the time to appreciate his remaining starts in goal next semester, his last as a Golden Eagle.

SUNY Oswego has posted this highlight video of their tie with Brockport that occurred on November 21st. It features commentary from Lakers coach Ed Gosek.

BROCKPORT SHUTS OUT BUFFALO STATE

Senior Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT) made 33 saves including 19 in the second period leading The College at Brockport to a 3-0 victory over Buffalo State Friday night in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game at the Tuttle North Ice Arena in Brockport.

The shutout was the first in Green's Brockport career and the first for the Golden Eagles since a 3-0 win over Potsdam Feb. 23, 2010 in the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs as Todd Sheridan stopped 27 shots. The last regular season SUNYAC shutout for the Golden Eagles was back on January 29, 2004 with a 4-0 win over Fredonia as Andy Reynolds stopped 43 shots.

Brockport (5-5-1 Overall, 2-3-1 SUNYAC) took an early lead as freshman Zac Sikich (Oak Park, CA) finished off a quick rush up the ice with his third goal of the season. Junior Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) intercepted a pass in the Brockport defensive zone and sent a pass up the boards to Kody Vaisanen (Dundalk, ONT) who threw a quick pass across the ice to Sikich who broke in on the Buffalo State (1-6-2, 1-4-2) goalie beating him with a low shot 2:43 into the game.

The score remained 1-0 throughout the remainder of the first period, all of the second period and the first 15:34 of the third period as each goalie made several big saves. Green was especially effective in the second period with a season-best 19 saves.

Late in the third period, Brockport scored to take a 2-0 lead as freshman Aidan Verbeke (Elmwood Park, IL) notched his first career goal with assists from Jake Taylor (Port Perry, ONT) and Troy Polino (Limerick, PA). Polino passed the puck into the offensive zone and Taylor charged toward the net with the puck and slipped a backhand pass to the top of the crease where Verbeke slid a shot under the pads of the Bengals goalie for the 2-0 Brockport lead.

Buffalo State went on a power play 11 seconds later and pulled its goalie for the two skater advantage keeping the goalie out for the entire two minute power play as Green made four saves during the extra-man opportunity. Less than 15 seconds after the penalty expired and with the Bengal goalie still on the bench, Brockport sealed the victory with an empty net goal by James Ryan (Richmond Hill, ONT).

STYLUS REPORT ON BROCKPORT'S FRESHMEN

Reporting for the Brockport Stylus, Eric Mueller looks at what the freshmen have meant to the team...

Freshmen helping ice hockey continue to compete

The College at Brockport ice hockey team is 10 games into the season. The team has a record of 4 - 5 - 1 overall. Brockport had an impressive 4 - 4 tie against SUNY Oswego the No. 2 team in the nation, Brockport is now unbeaten in Oswego the past two seasons.

This past weekend, the Golden Eagles came away with a 4 - 3 victory over Manhattanville College Saturday, Nov. 29, in the championship game of the Rutland Herald Invitational Tournament. One of the bright spots this year has been the impressive play of their younger players.

The play of the team’s true freshmen has stood out in particular. The four notable freshmen are forwards Ryan Kangas, Zac Sikich, Dylan Shapiro and defenseman Brian Hurlimann. Between the four, they have 16 points. Kangas leads the way with nine of those 16. There has been a seamless transition from junior play to the college game for these particular players. Not only are they playing but the freshmen are making plays and forcing Head Coach Brian Dickinson to give them added responsibility on special teams. The play of Kangas and Sikich has not gone unnoticed. The two freshmen forwards work extremely hard on the ice, which in turn has earned them a spot on the top line with the team’s leading scorer junior forward Chase Nieuwendyk.

Kangas has nine points on the season which leads all freshmen. Kangas is one of the smartest players on the ice and has great patience with the puck. His positioning has been top notch this year which has resulted in some good offensive numbers. Kangas is able to find the holes on the ice, which is why he is almost always available to his line-mates for a pass. Positioning comes natural to Kangas and he credits most of his offensive production to “being in the right place at the right time this year.”

“Ryan Kangas knows the game extremely well,” Dickinson said. “He’s very patient with the puck he doesn’t panic [...] He’s been a real good fit where ever we have put him. He’s settled in on the power play real nice and has about five power play points this season.”

The recruit who has flown under the radar has been Sikich.

“He’s been a pleasant surprise,” Dickinson said. “We didn’t know much about him coming out of Granite City in Minnesota. He was actually referred to us by an alumni and skating-wise he’s proven that he can play at this level and has just moved himself up from a fourth line type of situation to now playing on our first.”

Sikich plays a feisty game and is always trying to get under the skin of the other team. He has taunted the opposing teams bench trying to get the opposing team off their game. Sikich brings a type of agitator role and some top notch chirps to the Golden Eagles.

Hurlimann has been as steady as they come on the backend. The freshman has had quite a bit of responsibility dropped on him and has not disappointed his team with solid defensive play. Hurlimann rarely gets beaten and the team breaks out of its zone with ease when he is out there. When a defenseman is playing well, you rarely notice him on the ice and this is most definitely the case for Hurlimann. Hurlimann rarely makes the wrong play and puts players around him in a position to succeed on the ice. Something that will continue to develop is Hurlimann’s offensive game.

“He’s been real solid, a big body that likes to control the space in front of the net and he’s done a real good job,” Dickinson said. “Real steady type of hard-nose defenseman and he’s got cannon so we’ve used him on the power play.”

With these four freshmen contributing the way they are now, the future is very bright for the Golden Eagles. As the season goes on, each one of them should continue to improve and Brockport will be a team to be reckoned with in the future.

BROCKPORT HOSTS 2 "MUST WIN" GAMES THIS WEEKEND

As the first semester comes to a close and the season reaches its halfway point, Brockport hosts two pivotal games this weekend. SUNYAC foes Buffalo and Fredonia come to town and both are “must win” – and “can win” -- games for the Golden Eagles.

Brockport currently sits in 8th place in the conference with a 1-3-1 SUNYAC record, a far cry from the 4th place that they had been pegged to finish the season in. The team, though, can make a huge leap in the standings and end up in 4th or 5th place if they play to the home ice advantage this weekend and continue their recent success (4-2-1 in their last six).

Buffalo State is a point ahead of Brockport in the standings and sports an overall record of 1-5-2 (compared to Brockport’s 4-5-1). The Golden Eagles certainly have a score to settle with the Bengals after getting severely pummeled by them in the playoffs last year – a 7-2 loss marred by countless odd-man rushes that showed Buffalo State at their very best offensively.  It was only days after Brockport closed out the regular season by beating them 3-2.

That 3-2 game is what we are more likely to see on Friday. Graduating last year were the stellar goaltender Kevin Carr (2.57, .922) and steady playmakers Mike Zannella (7-15-22) and Dan Turgeon (12-15-27), guys who really got under Brockport’s skin for 4 years.

Goaltending has been by committee this year with freshman Ian Sylves (.859 and 6.08 in 4 games) and sophomore Mike DeLaVergne (.891, 3.88 in 5 games). The offense is still finding itself as has they have scored just 18 goals on the season, led by Anthony Beaumont’s 4 lamplighters and Taylor Price’s 6 assists. Nick Melligan is another fellow to watch out for – he excels on the power play.

Fredonia comes to town on Saturday, marking the first time their coach Jeff Meredith coaches against his son Matt, a freshman forward for Brockport. It will be interesting to see how that pans out. Fredonia is at the bottom of the standings this year, something atypical for a Meredith team. They are winless after 6 games.

Their top returning goal scorers coming into the season were Stephen Castriota (10-10-20) and Jared Wynia (11-5-16). Castriota has 3 goals on this young season while Wynia still has yet to find the back of the net – a frustration which could make him dangerous against Brockport. Leading the team this year is Taylor Bourne (4-5-9). Chris Eiserman sees the most time in goal (.887, 4.27).

Both games begin at 7:00 PM on their respective nights.

NIEUWENDYK SCORES SUNYAC HONORS

Junior forward Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT/Trenton Golden Hawks) of the College at Brockport Men's Ice Hockey team has been selected as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending on November 30th.

Nieuwendyk was named the Rutland Herald Invitational Tournament MVP after leading The College at Brockport to the championship game victory. During the tournament Nieuwendyk scored three goals and added two assists to help the Golden Eagles to victories over Tufts and Manhattanville.

During the first game against Tufts, Nieuwendyk started the scoring for Brockport five minutes into the second period on a power play goal.  Less than one minute later Tufts tied the game at one but Nieuwendyk regained the lead at the 7:48 mark.  Nieuwendyk also had an assist on a third period goal that helped Brockport to a 4-2 win.

In the championship game against Manhattanville, Brockport quickly found itself in a two goal deficit.  Eleven minutes into the second period the Golden Eagles had a power play and Nieuwendyk was able to connect.  Later in the second period Brockport was down by two goals but Nieuwendyk added his second and final assist of the tournament to get the Golden Eagles within one.  Brockport defeated Manhattanville 4-3 to capture the championship.

CHASE IS IN THE CHASE FOR ALL-AMERICAN

Fans should make it a point to really savor Chase Nieuwendyk's season. He was named the Rutland Herald Tournament MVP yesterday and he already has 8 goals on the year. Projecting his numbers over a full season, he could have a whopping 20 goals and 33 points. He's putting up some numbers that over a full season would merit serious consideration for All-American.

BROCKPORT WINS RUTLAND HERALD INVITATIONAL

The College at Brockport Hockey team came from behind with two goals late in the second period and the only goal in the third period for a 4-3 victory over Manhattanville Saturday night in the championship game of the Rutland Herald Invitational Tournament in Rutland, VT.

Brockport (4-5-1) fell behind early as Manhattanville (3-4-1) scored in the first two minutes of the game and then took a 2-0 lead at the 10:50 mark in the period.

Junior Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT) scored his third goal of the tournament to cut the lead in half two minutes later with a power play goal set up by Zac Sikich (Oak Park, CA) and Ryan Kangas (Williamstown, MA).

Manhattanville regained the two-goal lead midway through the second period before Brockport came charging back.

Nieuwendyk set up the second Brockport goal with an assist on a goal by Bobby Chayka (Hardwick, NJ) to cut the lead to 3-2.

Less than three minutes later, Troy Polino (Limerick, PA) knotted the game at 3-3 with assists from Kangas and Jeremy DeFazio (Oakville, ONT) and the teams went into the third period with a tie score.

Both teams were aggressive offensively in the third period and both goalies came up with big saves but Andrew Parks (Orillia, ONT) broke the tie with his first goal of the season with assists from Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) and Dylan Shapiro (Rochester, NY) at the 10:35 mark of the period.

Manhattanville pressured down the stretch in an attempt to tie the score but Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT) came up with save after save finishing the period with 12 of his 26 total saves in the period.

Nieuwendyk was named the tournament's most valuable player while Luker and Green were selected to the All-Tournament team.

BROCKPORT BEATS TUFTS 4-2

Junior Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT) scored two goals and fellow junior Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) added a goal and two assists for The College at Brockport Hockey team as the Golden Eagles skated to a 4-2 win over Tufts University Friday afternoon in the first round of the Rutland Herald Invitational Tournament in Castleton, VT.

Brockport (3-5-1) advance to play the winner of Castleton and Manhattanville at 7 pm Saturday in the championship game of the tournament. The win for the Golden Eagles improved their record to 2-1-1 in the last four games.

After a scoreless first period where senior goalie Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT) made 13 saves, the Golden Eagles started the scoring with Nieuwendyk's first of two goals in the period. The assists on the play went to Luker and James Ryan (Richmond Hill, ONT) 4:31 into the period.

Tufts (1-4-1) tied the score less than a minute later but Nieuwendyk struck again at the 7:48 mark in the period with another assist from Luker and the Golden Eagles led 2-1.

At 10:29, Tufts tied the score again but Brockport regained the lead less than four minutes later as Chad Cummings (Caledon, ONT) notched his second goal of the year with assists coming from freshman Matt Meredith (Fredonia, NY) and junior Kody Vaisanen (Dundalk, ONT) at Brockport took a 3-2 lead into the third period.

The combination of Luker and Nieuwendyk was not through as Luker netted his second goal of the season midway through the final period as Nieuwendyk and Ryan Kangas (Williamstown, MA) added the assists and Brockport led 4-2.

Tufts added pressure down the stretch pulling its goalie with two minutes to play but could not close the game as the Brockport defense blocked three shots in the final minutes of action.

Green finished with 31 saves for Brockport.

BROCKPORT TO PLAY TUFTS ON FRIDAY

NOTE: The games have been rescheduled to Friday and Saturday

While many Brockport students are gone home for the long holiday weekend, the hockey team will be taking to the ice instead. They are traveling to Castleton State in Vermont to participate in the Rutland Herald Invitational.

The other 3 teams in this year’s tourney are Castleton, Manhanttanville, and Tufts.

Brockport plays Tufts at 3:45 Friday. The winner goes on to Saturday’s championship game while the loser participates in Saturday’s consolation game.

The Tufts Jumbos are 1-3-1 on the season.

Although their most recent game was a shutout against Becker, they have allowed 23 goals on the season in their 4 other games. That should be music to Brockport’s ears as the Golden Eagles’ high-powered offense is just finding its stride (last weekend alone Jake Taylor had 3 goals).

Goals have been hard for them to come by for Tufts, but it’s not for lack of trying. Brian Brown is Tufts’ leading offensive force with 2 goals. 9 other players each have one goal. Last year, no one on the roster surpassed 13 points.

Mason Pulde has seen the majority of the time in net and has been pummeled with 131 shots in 4 games. As a side note, it should be noted that Mason is a high-character kid who helped bring sled hockey to Nobels, the boarding school he attended as a teen, to help the disabled pursue the best sport on Earth.

CORTLAND BEATS BROCKPORT IN HIGH SCORING AFFAIR

Sophomore Jake Taylor (Port Perry, ONT) scored just 27 seconds into the game for The College at Brockport Hockey team but Cortland answered five seconds later and went on to a 5-4 victory Saturday night in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game in Cortland.

After the score was tied at 1-1 32 seconds into the game, Cortland (2-4-1 Overall, 2-4-1 SUNYAC) added three more goals in the next nine minutes and took what looked like a commanding lead into the first intermission.

A double minor penalty to Cortland early in the second period and an additional penalty one minute later led to an extended power play opportunity for Brockport (2-5-1, 1-3-1) and the Golden Eagles capitalized with a pair of power play goals in a span of 17 seconds to cut the lead to 4-3. Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT) scored first and Bobby Chayka (Hardwick, NJ) scored his first goal of the season less than 20 seconds later to make it a 4-3 game.

Five minutes later, Jesse Facchini (Mississauga, ONT) tied the score at 4-4 scoring with assists from Rob Hall (Schuamberg, IL) and Kody Vaisanen (Dundalk, ONT).

With 1:21 left in the second period, Cortland scored to regain the lead and took a 5-4 lead into the second intermission.

Each team had scoring chances in the final period but neither could find the back of the net and after nine goals in the first 40 minutes, the goalies for each team held their opponent scoreless for the final 20 minutes of action and the Red Dragons held on for the victory.

Jared Lockhurst
(Caledon, ONT) started for Brockport and was replaced by Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONY) after allowing three goals in the first seven minutes of the game. Green played the rest of the game and made 26 saves.

WTOP'S HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE OSWEGO GAME

BROCPORT TIES #2 OSWEGO, 4-4

2 weeks after staying with powerhouse Plattsburgh in a 1-0 loss, Brockport tied #2-ranked Oswego Friday night at Oswego. Brockport should beat Cortland tonight, so it will be great to come out of the weekend with 3 points.

Here's the recap from Brockport Athletics...

Sophomore Jake Taylor (Port Perry, ONT) and junior James Ryan (Richmond Hill, ONT) scored two goals each including one each in the third period as The College at Brockport Hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie with Oswego, ranked No. 2 in the country according to the latest USCHO.com poll, Friday night in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game in Oswego.

Brockport (2-4-1 Overall, 2-1-1 SUNYAC) took the early lead as Taylor scored in the first period with Jeremy DeFazio (Oakville, ONT) and Troy Polino (Limerick, PA) picking up assists just 6:14 into the contest.

Oswego (5-0-1, 3-0-1) answered with a pair of goals in a span of 32 seconds early in the second period to take a 2-1 lead.

Midway through the period, Ryan tapped home a rebound of a shot by Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) from the point on a power play as the Golden Eagles knotted the game at 2-2.

Just 2:36 later on a Laker power play opportunity, Oswego regained the lead with its only special team goal of the game. The Lakers finished 1-for-5 with the extra man opportunity.

Ryan tied the game at 3-3 with 5:21 remaining in the third period on an assist from Dylan Shapiro (Rochester, NY) but the Lakers regained the lead just 25 seconds later and Oswego had a 4-3 lead with less than five minutes to play.

On the ensuing face off, Brockport controlled the puck and after it was dumped into the Oswego zone, Polino chased after the puck, winning possession behind the Laker goal before sending a centering pass out to Taylor who fired a shot past the Oswego goalie to tie the game at 4-4.

Each team had scoring opportunities in the closing minutes and the overtime period featured back and forth offensive rushes but neither team was able to score and Brockport's Jared Lockhurst (Caledon, ONT) finished with 41 saves including 16 in the first period and four in the overtime session for the Golden Eagles.

A BROCKPORT ALUMNUS SHOWS HE HAS SOME FIGHT IN HIM

Long-time Brockport fans will remember former team captain and defenseman Mike Hayward who was second-team All-SUNYAC in 2011 when he tied for first place in the SUNYAC for goals by a defender with six and finished the season with 14 points. He's been playing with the Memphis Riverkings. In the video below you get to see him do something that was frowned upon in NCAA hockey...that is, FIGHT...

Thank you to all of the organizers, volunteers, and donors who made Saves For a Cure weekend a success!

BROCKPORT BEATS CANTON 4-1

Junior Jeremy DeFazio (Oakville, ONT) and freshman Zac Sikich (Oak Park, CA) each scored powerplay goals in the first five minutes of the game for The College at Brockport Hockey team as the Golden Eagles went on to post a 4-1 victory over Canton Saturday night in a non-conference matchup in the Tuttle North Arena in Brockport.

Brockport (2-4) had two power play opportunities in the opening minutes of the game and took advantage of them both as DeFazio scored the first goal just 18 seconds into the extra man situation from in close after a shot from the point by Brian Hurlimann (Hilton, NY) was block near the goal and DeFazio stuffed the loose puck under the Canton (0-4-1) goalie for the early lead.

Less than three minutes later, Brockport was on another power play and Sikich scored only 14 seconds after the penalty started with a similar play and a shot from the point by Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY).

Defenseman Chad Cummings (Caledon, ONT) scored with two minutes to play in the second period to extend the Brockport lead to 3-0. Freshman Matt Meredith (Fredonia, NY) and Kody Vaisanen (Dundalk, ONT) were each credited with their first assists of the season on the play.

Early in the third period, Canton broke up the shutout with a shot from the top of the faceoff circle to the left of Brockport goalie Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT).

The Kangaroos pulled their goalie in the closing minutes in an attempt to tie the score but Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT) scored into the empty net with 1:21 to play for the final margin of victory.

On the night, Brockport was 2-for-3 in power plays and successfully killed off all four Canton power play opportunities.

Green finished with 31 saves including 13 in the third period. Vaisanen and Ryan Kangas (Williamstown, MA) had two assists each for the Golden Eagles

USCHO RECAP OF GENESEO GAME

Here is Russell Jaslow's recap of the Geneseo game for USCHO.com...

http://www.uscho.com/recaps/2014/11/14/geneseo-uses-power-play-horrigan-to-beat-brockport/

BROCKPORT FALLS TO NATIONALLY-RANKED GENESEO

The recap from Brockport Athletics....

Junior Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT) scored for The College at Brockport Hockey team with a two-man advantage late in the third period to bring the Golden Eagles to within a goal at 4-3 but Geneseo added an empty net goal in the closing seconds for a 5-3 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win Friday night at the Tuttle North Ice Arena in Brockport.

The game was the first of two over the weekend as the Golden Eagles host Saves for a Cure Weekend. Brockport (1-4 Overall, 1-2 SUNYAC) will host Canton at 7 pm Saturday in the second half of the weekend series. All of the ticket sales, jersey auction donations and 50/50 raffle proceeds are donated to Golisano Children's Hospital in Rochester.

Geneseo (3-2, 3-2) took an early lead as Brockport was whistled for an early penalty. The Knights took the 1-0 lead with a power play goal just 22 seconds into the man advantage and then made it a 2-0 game less than 30 seconds later with a hard shot from the point that went off the post and in the goal at the 7:01 mark of the period.

Late in the first period, Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) cut the Geneseo lead in half with his first goal of the season with a blast from the point and an assist from fellow defenseman Bobby Chayka (Hardwick, NJ).

With 6:18 left in the second period, Brockport's Troy Polino (Limerick, PA) tied the game at 2-2 as he was set up by Robbie Hall (Schaumberg, IL) and Ryan Kangas (Williamstown, MA).

Geneseo regained the lead near the midpoint of the second period with its second power play goal of the night and took a 4-2 lead seven minutes into the final period with another man advantage goal.

With less than seven minutes to play, Brockport was on a two-man advantage when the Knights were whistled for an interference penalty just prior to a delay of game penalty on goalie Nick Horrigan for moving the net off its moorings.

The Golden Eagles moved the puck around the zone with Chayka sending a pass down low to Jake Taylor (Port Perry, ONT) who sent a quick pass through the slot area and Nieuwendyk slapped a one-timer into the open half of the net to trim the lead to 4-3.

Brockport had offensive pressure late in the game after pulling goalie Jared Lockhurst (Caledon, ONT) with a minute to play but Geneseo cleared the zone and scored into the open net for the final margin of victory.

Lockhurst finished with 33 saves for Brockport.

A HUGE WEEKEND FOR BROCKPORT HOCKEY

Fasten your seat belts.

What a weekend it’s going to be for hockey in Brockport. It’s the annual Saves For a Cure weekend. The alumni game is Saturday. Our biggest rival pays us a visit on Friday. A new rival comes to Tuttle North for the first of many battles.

Diehard hockey fans always circle the dates for the Brockport-Geneseo match-ups on their calendars. Hard-fought, hard-played intense games have become the norm for this regional match-up that looks for SUNYAC bragging rights in the 585.

It will be a tough one for Brockport as Geneseo is the 11th-ranked team in the nation per the most recent USCHO.com poll. Last season when they went 23-7-0 and made it to a Frozen Four semifinal.

The Ice Knights are 2-2-0 on the year, having beat Morrisville twice while getting stunned by Potsdam 2-1 (a team which Brockport beat 3-2) and getting soundly beaten by Plattsburgh 7-4 (one night after Brockport hung with them in a 1-0 loss).

They may have lost superstar Zach Vit (18-13-31) to graduation but still have lots of serious firepower. Brockport will have their hands full with seniors Tyler Brickler (18-14-32) and Justin Scharfe (11-20-31), junior David Ripple (9-15-24) and sophomore Stephen Collins (13-11-24). Blueliner Jack Caradonna is a two-way threat (3-17-20).

Manning the net is Nick Horrigan who was lights-out last year with a .926 save percentage. He’s right there this year with a .928.

They are a very deep squad and their third line is just as good as the 2nd line – and even 1st line – on some very good teams.

To beat them, Brockport really has to amp up their power play to last year’s standards, bust their butts for lunchbucket goals and Jared Lockhurst has to continue to be Jared Lockhurst (the Golden Eagles can steal any game with him net).

Brockport will have an easier go of it Saturday night when SUNY Canton comes to town. This is their third season in DIII as an independent and in the coming years they will join the SUNYAC. So, this is a taste of the future that will be.

They are 0-2-1 on the year after having won just 5 games last season. Ken Orlando was a highly-touted recruit coming into this season and he has 3 goals on the year. Fellow freshman Josh Sova has 2 goals. Those two will help a team that needs scoring: Last year, only 4 players surpassed 9 points. #1 goalie Spencer Landry has put up a great .914 this year.

He, too, is a freshman, so the Kangaroos have an excellent young core that they can develop this year and capitalize on in the 3 subsequent seasons. It should make for yet another competitive team in our conference.

This weekend is also Saves For a Cure weekend.

Saves for a Cure is a non-profit, charitable organization started by Todd Sheridan ('11), a former Brockport goalie -- and one of Brockport's all-time greatest players -- and the College's all-time leader in goals-against average (3.07), career wins (29) and saves percentage (.904). He also holds the 2 of the 4 best single season saves percentages for Brockport.

In 2005 Todd was diagnosed with cancer, given a 70% chance of survival and told he’d never play hockey again. Todd beat cancer and the odds and then had quite the career at Brockport, as made evident by his career numbers and the team's only 2 playoff wins.

With his success story as its backdrop, Saves For a Cure oversees a variety of fundraisers, including the annual Saves For a Cure game, which this year for the first time is games (plural). All proceeds from any Saves For a Cure event or activity go to the children’s cancer clinic at Strong Memorial Hospital.

The highlight of the games is an auction whereby fans can bid on the special jerseys being worn during each of the two games. The auction has begun and will continue through 4 pm (Eastern), Sunday, November 16, 2014. The winners will be listed on the auction web page and will be notified via email.

Winners will be able to pick up their jerseys at the Brockport home games December 5-6 or will be shipped and arrive in time for the holidays.

Bidding is online at 2014-15 Jersey Auction page:

http://gobrockport.com/sports/2011/1/24/MHOCKEY_0124110742.aspx?path=mhockey

Bidders will be asked to submit a jersey number, bid amount (minimum bid is $75), and the color of the jersey that you would like to bid on. Bids will be updated as often as possible on the auction page. Last year, nearly $3,000 was collected from the Jersey auction.

Dear Former Golden Eagles,

We are excited to announce that this upcoming weekend is our annual alumni weekend. However this year is even more exciting as Saves for a Cure falls on the same weekend. I am sure all of you are aware of alumni Todd Sheridan ’10 and his foundation and the fight against cancer! Online now is the current auction for the Saves for a Cure jersey’s we will be wearing over the weekend. Go to our website, http://www.gobrockport.com and the Men’s Ice Hockey homepage and you will find the link to the auction on the right hand side.

We are looking forward to having a good number of alumni in attendance as we take on SUNY Canton at 7PM, Saturday November 15th.

Details/Information for Alumni weekend are as following:

This year has already been an exciting time for Brockport Ice Hockey. We are looking to continually get better day in and day out between practice and games. This season we have started off 1-3, but there has been a ton of positives to take away. We earned our first win on Saturday versus a new and improved Potsdam Bears team after a hard fought 1-0 lost to Plattsburgh on Friday night. A strong effort and response in the 3rd period Saturday night was what we needed to get soaring. We will continue to grow and get better as we head into a good week of practice before alumni weekend.

The coaching staff has been talking about the potential upgrades at Tuttle North, however we need your help as alumni. The most recent talk is to upgrade the stands as all of you know can be very hazardous if someone is not familiar with them. With that being said, the coaching staff has talked about the idea of planning for a new expanded locker room and eventually new boards and glass, but without the help of the Golden Eagle Alumni this will never be made possible. The College at Brockport Ice Hockey family is looking to expand this season as well as in the future raising money to continue to make our program better.

We look forward to greeting all of you this weekend and having you back to Tuttle North! Please RSVP no later than Wednesday, November 12th. I know this letter is getting out late, but we are looking to solidify numbers to accommodate for a gathering after the game Saturday night at Bill Gray’s.

Again, thank you for your continued support, safe travels, and Go Golden Eagles!

NIEUWENDYK IS BROCKPORT'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Junior forward Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT) has been named The College at Brockport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 10. Nieuwendyk had a big role in leading Brockport to a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over Potsdam Saturday night.

Every time the Golden Eagles were in need for a spark on offense against Potsdam, Nieuwendyk filled the bill, finishing the game with a goal and two assists in Brockport’s 3-2 win.

Potsdam jumped out the early lead scoring within the first minute of the game. However Nieuwendyk helped Brockport even the score when he sent the puck from the corner out in front of the net which was redirected by a Golden Eagle teammate past the Bears goalie to tie the score.

Potsdam yet again took the lead, scoring the only goal of the second period.

On a power play in the third period, Nieuwendyk redirected a redirection on a shot from the blue line under the Potsdam goalie to knot the game up at 2-2. The Golden Eagles didn’t take long to score the game winning goal on another power play as they closed out the scoring just 3:34 removed from their previous goal.

Brockport was on a 3-on-1 play with the first pass sent from Nieuwendyk before the Golden Eagles buried the puck into the back of the net securing the team’s first win of the year.

The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend at home in the Tuttle North Ice Arena for the annual Saves for a Cure Weekend both Friday and Saturday. On Friday Brockport is scheduled to for a SUNYAC game against Geneseo at 7 pm and on Saturday a non-conference game against Canton at 7 pm.

USCHO REPORT ON POTSDAM GAME

USCHO's Russell Jaslow was in town last night to watch the Brockport-Potsdam ticket. Here is his recap of the game:

http://www.uscho.com/recaps/2014/11/08/shapiro-scores-late-to-lead-brockport-over-potsdam/

BROCKPORT BEATS POTSDAM 3-2

Junior Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT) and freshman Dylan Shapiro (Rochester, NY) scored power play goals in the third period in a span of 3:34 lifting The College at Brockport Hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Potsdam Saturday night in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game in the Tuttle North Arena in Brockport.

The win was the first of the season for Brockport (1-3 Overall, 1-1 SUNYAC) and the ninth in the last 11 meetings with Potsdam (2-2, 1-2).

The Bears took the early lead with a goal just 40 seconds into the first period.

Freshman Zac Sikich (Oak Park, CA) knotted the score at 1-1 just four minutes later with a pass from Nieuwendyk in the corner out in front of the goal where Sikich redirected the puck into the back of the net for his first career goal.

Potsdam made it a 2-1 game in the second period scoring with one second remaining in a power play.
In the third period, Potsdam was whistled for a cross-checking penalty at the 12:02 mark and just 15 seconds into the power play, Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) lifted a shot toward the Potsdam goal and Ryan Kangas (Williamstown, MA) slapped the puck to Nieuwendyk who poked it under the Potsdam goalie to tie the score at 2-2.

Three minutes later, Potsdam was penalized again – this time for a slash and 34 seconds into that power play, Shapiro completed a 3-on-1 play redirecting the puck into the back of the goal for the 3-2 Brockport lead.

Junior Jared Lockhurst (Caledon, ONT) locked down the victory with three saves in the final minutes as Potsdam pulled its goalie to even up the skaters on the ice after being called for too many men on the ice with 1:14 left to play.

Lockhurst finished with 40 saves with 15 in each of the first two periods and 10 in the final stanza for the Golden Eagles.

Brockport will host Geneseo and Canton next weekend for the annual Saves for a Cure weekend of games. The jerseys worn by the Brockport players in each game will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Saves for a Cure foundation founded by former Brockport goalie Todd Sheridan.

BROCKPORT LOSES CLOSE ONE TO #7 PLATTSBURGH, 1-0

Moral victories do have their place in athletics, just as they do in life. So, while the scoreboard may say Brockport lost to Plattsbugh last night, it was a sort of moral victory. To hold the seventh-best team in the nation to just 1 goal is impressive. Really impressive.

That proves the team is on the right path and true victories -- and lots of them -- are coming.

Last night's affair had the feel and play of a playoff game. Who knows, it might be the same sort of game we see after the regular season closes.

It was a team effort that fed off the inspiring play of Jared Lockhurst. Brockport's goalie was his usual amazing self, turning back 33 shots. His last save of the game is the best one that I've seen out of any goalie on any team the past 2 or 3 years (it was a full extension dive that came from a full squat at the other side of the net -- absolutely amazing reflexes and physicality!).

Brockport hosts Potsdam tonight. The Bears stunned Geneseo on Friday, so they will be riding an emotional high at Tuttle North.

If the Golden Eagles win tonight it will be the 150th victory of Brian Dickinson's collegiate coaching career. Savor that special milestone!

Below are some of the various recaps of last night's game...

From the Brockport Athletic Department...

Junior goalie Jared Lockhurst (Caledon, ONT) made 33 saves including double-digit totals in the first and third periods for The College at Brockport Hockey team but a second period goal was the difference in a 1-0 loss to Plattsburgh Friday night in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game at the Tuttle North Arena in Brockport.

Plattsburgh (2-0 Overall, 2-0 SUNYAC), ranked No. 7 in the country in the latest USCHO.com poll, had a 14-6 shots advantage in the first period by Lockhurst was able to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard.

In the second period, a shot from the point got past Lockhurst for the only goal of the game as Plattsburgh took a 1-0 lead with 6:28 left in the period.

Brockport (0-3, 0-1) fought off two penalties in the first period and three more in the second period as Plattsburgh finished the game 0-for-5 with the man advantage.

In the third period, Brockport had a couple late scoring chances to tie the game with the best chance coming with 7:30 left in the period. Senior Bobby Chayka (Hardwick, NJ) took a pass at the point and skated in two strides to the top of the faceoff circle and fired a hard shot toward the upper corner of the goal that missed the goal by inches high and wide.

Later in the period, Lockhurst made three quick saves on a Plattsburgh rush including one with a diving stop with just over two minutes left to play. Brockport took Lockhurst out of the game for the final 1:15 for the extra attacker but could not score the equalizer.

From the Brockport Stylus....

Three games in and the College at Brockport is still searching for the first win of the season. Brockport lost 1-0 to SUNY Plattsburgh in a spirted effort. Offense has been the problem for the Golden Eagles this year. In three games Brockport has only been able to produce two goals. Brockport was out shot again this game which has become a recurring theme this season.
The past two games Brockport has gotten into penalty trouble which has really hindered their offensive production. Throughout the first two periods staying out of the box was an issue the Golden Eagles, but the third period was another story.

The first period brought about sloppy play from both teams, passes weren’t connecting and both teams seemed slow to get their wheels going. Brockport was out shot thirteen to six in the first. A majority of the period was spent in their own zone. Brockport seemed very passive in the defensive zone which allowed Plattsburgh to set up the offense and find the open man. Puck watching almost cost the Golden Eagles twice early in the period had it not been for junior goalie Jared Lockhurst, it would have been a tough opening period for the team.

The second period started just how the first ended, with a lot of penalties for Brockport. After the teams felt each other out in the first it was a much different game in the second period of play. Brockport came out strong and fast, but then seemed willing to sit back. This allowed Plattsburgh to have its way in the Brockport zone. It all starts in the defensive zone, Brockport spent a lot of time there which didn’t allow them to generate offense. When the Eagles finally reached the offensive zone, players were tired which therefor lead to smooth break outs for Plattsburgh. It wasn’t until the third when this changed.

The third brought out a different team in Brockport, the team was playing fast and dictating pace.

Defenseman were pinching and taking chances in risk for offense. Plattsburgh was content to sit back and hold on to their one goal lead. Brockport pulled the goalie in a final effort to tie up the game but the Eagles were unable to cash in.

That’s three games this season and three losses. Brockport will try to put one in the win column Saturday night against SUNY Potsdam.

From the Press Republican...

Plattsburgh State kept up pressure in Brockport’s end Friday and got one shot past goaltender Jared Lockhurst for a SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey win.

“Actually, I thought we played a really sound all-around game,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said of the 1-0 contest. “Obviously it wasn’t a perfect game. But I thought we moved the puck really well and had a lot of great scoring chances (Friday). I thought their goalie played really well.”

Plattsburgh’s goalie, Brady Rouleau, played well, too, earning a shutout in his first start with the Cardinals. The sophomore made 22 saves, and Emery said he was “very solid.”

The seventh-ranked Cardinals (2-0, 2-0 SUNYAC) visit Geneseo tonight.

Emery said Plattsburgh started the game with five or six really good chances and went on to spend much of the game in the offensive zone.

Rich Botting gave the Cardinals the lead in the middle of the second period with an assist from fellow defenseman Anthony Calabrese.

“Brockport did a great job blocking shots, and Botting showed great patience and great poise,” Emery said. “Two guys went down to block his shot, and he held onto it and then put it right inside the post. It was a great shot.”

The Golden Eagles pulled Lockhurst at the end of the game, and then Plattsburgh took a penalty with 29 seconds left. But Emery said the Cardinals finished off the game with a strong penalty kill.
Lockhurst finished with 33 saves for Brockport (0-3, 0-1).

BROCKPORT TO HOST NORTH COUNTRY TEAMS THIS WEEKEND

The North Country teams -- Plattsburgh and Potsdam -- pay a visit to Tuttle North this Friday and Saturday (7:00 start).

For the second Friday in a row, Brockport hosts a nationally-ranked team as Plattsburgh sits in 7th place on USCHO's latest poll.

Plattsburgh started their season in typical fashion, beating Potsdam 4-2 last weekend. Last year they were 19-5-2 overall.

They were -- and are a young team -- and all of their leading scorers are returning. Looking at last year's stat sheets, they didn't have a senior appear on the team leader board for scoring until the 10th slot. That means look out for the likes of Alex Jensen (13-16-29), Alex Brenton (12-2-14), and Dillan Fox (9-15-24).

This season is one of transition in net as Matthew Cadieux graduated after a ridiculous .935 save percentage and 1.56 GAA in his final year. With big shoes to fill, junior Spencer Finney stopped 29 shots in last week's game. Coach Bob Emery is a stickler on goaltending, so don't expect too significant of a drop off from last season. Finney could be in .920 territory on the year.

Last season the Cardinals beat Brockport 6-0 at Plattsburgh and 5-4 in Brockport. I expect a close score again (not a blowout) and with Jared Lockhurst in net, a win is always possible by the underdogs.

On Saturday night, Potsdam strolls into town after a 9-14-2 season. Brockport beat them twice last year: 6-3 in the fall and 4-1 in the spring semester.

Last year, goals were hard to come by (2.92/game), but don't underestimate them: They are a seasoned bunch as 15 upperclassmen return this season. Any one of them can take it up a notch.

Jon Hall is their #1 goalie. In 9 games last year he had an .898 save percentage. This year, after 2 games, it stands at .917.

Billy Pascalli will likely be the leading scorer this year on the strength of 10-9-19 sophomore campaign. Keep an eye on Vinny Caligiuri who had 6 goals as a freshman. Gone is Mike Arnold who graduated after a stellar 17 goal capstone season.

Brockport should be victorious and if the power play clicks like it did last year (there's no reason it shouldn't), expect a potential blowout as Potsdam's penalty kill was 44th best in the nation.

HOCKEY TEAM ACTIVE IN COMMUNITY SERVICE

The first Sunday of November can mean only one thing for the more than 200 student-athletes from The College at Brockport: It’s time for the annual community-wide leaf raking project.

Members of the Golden Eagles’ 23 varsity sports teams banded together to help Brockport residents with cleaning up their yards of leaves during the State University of New York Athletic Conference’s (SUNYAC) eighth-annual leaf raking project. Most of those lawns belonged to senior citizens.

The hockey team was busy working, even with there having been games Friday and Saturday. The team also held a canned food drive with donations going to the Brockport food shelf.

NAZARETH POUNDS BROCKPORT 7-1

Here's the recap from the Brockport Athletic Department...

The College at Brockport dropped its first road game of the season Saturday night, falling 7-1 to Nazareth.

The loan goal for the Golden Eagles was scored by freshman Ryan Kangas (Williamstown, MA) late in the third period on an assist from junior Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) to cut the lead to 4-1 but Brockport couldn't overcome the disadvantage.

Nazareth applied consistent pressure in the first period. Goalie Aaron Green kept the Golden Eagles in the game making 10 saves and holding Nazareth to a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Flyers held the power play advantage converting three of their seven opportunities into goals. Brockport was unable to score on its five power play attempts.

Junior Shane Cavalieri (Richmond Hill, ONT) had a nice opportunity on a power play in the second period as he took a shot off a deflection from defenseman Dylan Howatt (Fairport, NY). The Golden Flyers had trouble clearing the puck, but the Golden Eagles were unable to capitalize as Nazareth finally sent the puck down the length of the ice to clear the man advantage.

Late in the third period Brockport had trouble staying out of the penalty box and as a result gave up two short-handed goals in less than 30 seconds. Green finished the game with 23 saves.

____________________________________________________________________________

Here's the recap from Naz's athletic department.....

Junior defenseman Don Olivieri scored two goals and added an assist and junior forward Rocky Gruttadauria also scored twice as Nazareth opened its 2014-15 hockey season with a 7-1 non-conference win over Brockport at the Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.

The Golden Flyers built a 3-0 lead after two periods and scored four more times in the final 20 minutes to win decisively. Brockport opened its season Friday with a 3-1 loss to Hobart and now stand at 0-2.

Gruttadauria scored the first two goals of the game -- his first two as a Golden Flyer -- to stake Nazareth to an early lead. His first goal came midway through the opening period off an assist from junior Tom
Seravalli. Then in the second period, he scored on the power play at 13:45 with Brockport's Troy Polino in the box for tripping. Olivieri and Scott Dawson gained assists.

Before the second period ended, David Seward scored to make it 3-0 with assists from Ben Blasko and Dominik Gabaj.

Gabaj, who transferred to Nazareth from Monroe Community College, scored his first goal for the Golden Flyers at 1:38 of the third as Nazareth continued to dominate. Blasko picked up his second of three assists.

Brockport's Ryan Kangas broke up the shutout bid with the Golden Eagles' lone goal at 11:10 of the third, but Nazareth answered just 1:10 later when C.J. Murray connected off assists from Julius Tamasy and freshman Matt Manzella. That triggered a three-goal burst in the span of 1:23. After Brockport's Chad Cummings drew a major penalty, Nazareth scored twice on the five-minute power play with both goals coming from Olivieri, who also transferred to Nazareth last season. Dawson drew the assist on the first goal while Tamasy and Blasko assisted on the second.

Nazareth had shooting advantages in all three periods and had a 33-24 edge overall. Junior Ed Zdolshek kept the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard until midway through the third period and ultimately finished with 23 saves. Aaron Green started in goal for Brockport and had 23 saves before being lifted in the third period. Andrew Winsor played the finaol 6:15 and made three saves.

Nazareth went 3-for-5 on the power play, while Brockport was 0-for-5.
