BROCKPORT FALLS TO NATIONALLY-RANKED GENESEO

The recap from Brockport Athletics....

Junior Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT) scored for The College at Brockport Hockey team with a two-man advantage late in the third period to bring the Golden Eagles to within a goal at 4-3 but Geneseo added an empty net goal in the closing seconds for a 5-3 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win Friday night at the Tuttle North Ice Arena in Brockport.

The game was the first of two over the weekend as the Golden Eagles host Saves for a Cure Weekend. Brockport (1-4 Overall, 1-2 SUNYAC) will host Canton at 7 pm Saturday in the second half of the weekend series. All of the ticket sales, jersey auction donations and 50/50 raffle proceeds are donated to Golisano Children's Hospital in Rochester.

Geneseo (3-2, 3-2) took an early lead as Brockport was whistled for an early penalty. The Knights took the 1-0 lead with a power play goal just 22 seconds into the man advantage and then made it a 2-0 game less than 30 seconds later with a hard shot from the point that went off the post and in the goal at the 7:01 mark of the period.

Late in the first period, Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) cut the Geneseo lead in half with his first goal of the season with a blast from the point and an assist from fellow defenseman Bobby Chayka (Hardwick, NJ).

With 6:18 left in the second period, Brockport's Troy Polino (Limerick, PA) tied the game at 2-2 as he was set up by Robbie Hall (Schaumberg, IL) and Ryan Kangas (Williamstown, MA).

Geneseo regained the lead near the midpoint of the second period with its second power play goal of the night and took a 4-2 lead seven minutes into the final period with another man advantage goal.

With less than seven minutes to play, Brockport was on a two-man advantage when the Knights were whistled for an interference penalty just prior to a delay of game penalty on goalie Nick Horrigan for moving the net off its moorings.

The Golden Eagles moved the puck around the zone with Chayka sending a pass down low to Jake Taylor (Port Perry, ONT) who sent a quick pass through the slot area and Nieuwendyk slapped a one-timer into the open half of the net to trim the lead to 4-3.

Brockport had offensive pressure late in the game after pulling goalie Jared Lockhurst (Caledon, ONT) with a minute to play but Geneseo cleared the zone and scored into the open net for the final margin of victory.

Lockhurst finished with 33 saves for Brockport.
