Junior Chase Nieuwendyk
(Georgetown, ONT) scored two goals including one late in the third
period as The College at Brockport Hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with
Potsdam in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)
game Saturday night in Potsdam.
Brockport (9-8-2 Overall, 4-5-2 SUNYAC) opened the scoring with less than five minutes remaining in the first period as Nieuwendyk netted his team-leading 13th goal of the season with assists from Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY) and James Ryan (Richmond Hill, ONT).
Potsdam (7-9-3, 3-5-2) answered less than a minute later with a power play on a two man advantage and the opening period ended with the teams tied at 1-1.
Midway through the second period, Kody Vaisanen (Dundalk, ONT) scored with an assist from Matt Meredith (Fredonia, NY) giving Brockport a 2-1 lead which held until late in the third period.
With just 2:16 remaining in the third period, Potsdam knotted the score at 2-2 but Nieuwendyk won the ensuing faceoff and skated into the Potsdam zone all the way to the net and fired one shot at the goal that was saved but slid the rebound under the pads of the Bears goalie only 12 seconds after Potsdam had tied the score as Brockport regained the lead.
The Bears pulled their goalie for the final minute of play and with 42 seconds left, scored to tie the game again at 3-3.
The teams played a scoreless five-minute overtime period as Brockport had three shot to Potsdam's one in the period.
Jared Lockhurst (Caledon, ONT) made 37 saves in the Brockport goal.
