BROCKPORT "TRAVELS" TO NAZARETH THIS WEEKEND

Brockport’s season begins this Saturday, October 29th with a 4:00 PM affair with the Nazareth Golden Flyers at the Bill Gray’s Iceplex in Rochester.

It’s a good way to start the season, even a test for Brockport, because Nazareth since entering DIII in 2012-2013 has mostly had Brockport’s number. The Golden Eagles are 1-3 against them and have been outscored by a combined 18 to 16 (these are high-scoring games).

Brockport began to exorcise that demon last year, beating Nazareth 7-0.

Nazareth was 8-14-4 last year. They did not have a 10-goal scorer. Oliver Janzen, now a junior, led the team with 8 lamplighters. Senior Dominik Gabaj led the team with 20 points last season.

Something to watch for is the physical play of 6’4” 200 pound senior forward CJ Murray who had 42 penalty minutes last year to complement his 12 points. It will be interesting to see how our big defensemen take him on.

Their goaltending is in transition, because Ed Zdolshek graduated and he started 22 games last year. It is unknown who will take the net, but it will likely be sophomore Tyler Hough who saw spot duty in 3 games and posted a .867 save percentage and 3.52 GAA.

It will be a good game for Brockport to work out the rust and prepare for next week’s home opener against the always-tough Oswego.

ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT PREVIEW OF SEASON

Coming off of a State University of New York Athletic Conference quarter-final appearance, The College at Brockport ice hockey team is looking to make strides and bring home a SUNYAC Championship this season.

The Golden Eagles were picked to finish fifth in the SUNYAC Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released by the conference office last week.

"That poll serves as motivation for us," commented Head Coach Brian Dickinson. "It gives us something to aim for and show the coaches that picked us fourth or fifth, that we're better than that."

Last season, the Green and Gold finished with a .500 record that included a 3-2 upset of UMASS Boston, who was ranked fifth nationally at the time.

Brockport graduated eight seniors last year, a class that will be hard to replace.

"It's hard to replace a two-time All-American and one of the top defensemen in the league, but our new guys have stepped right up to the plate and shown us that they want to be here," noted Dickinson.

Dickinson brought in nine newcomers this year comprising of six freshman and three transfers. The addition of Hunter Laslo and Hunter Critchlo on offense, as well as Chris Pollini and Bryan Carville on defense, will provide a spark to the Golden Eagles production on both sides of the puck.

"The guys that we added this year are all hard workers. From day one they've shown their best and I think they'll step in and really contribute to our lineup," said Dickinson.

Also joining the Green and Gold this season is assistant coach Kris Horn, who previously coached at the Division I level at Union College. "He is a student of the game and brings a lot to our program. He has an ora about him that demands respect, and all around he's a really good guy," commented Dickinson.

The Golden Eagles have a strong sophomore class returning to the ice in forward Tim Kielich and goaltender Cole Burack. Kielich was named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year last season after scoring eight goals and 11 assists in 16 conference games and adding another three goals and eight assists outside the league. Burack posted a record of 6-4-4 between the pipes and posted one shutout against Nazareth College. The Rockwall, Texas native stopped 425 shots for a save percentage of .897.

This year's captain will be junior forward Aidan Verbeke along with assistant Rob Hall and Dylan Shapiro. "We're really excited to have Aidan be our captain this year. He really responds to the guys well and they respect what he brings to the table," said Dickinson. "We expect Hall to anchor our defense with all the experience he has and be a leader on the blue line."

The Golden Eagles will open their season this Saturday as they take on Nazareth College at the Bill Gray's Regional Ice Plex at 4 pm. Brockport will host SUNY Oswego in its home opener on Nov. 4 at 7 pm in a rematch of last year's SUNYAC quarter-final.

BROCKPORT STYLUS LOOKS AHEAD AT THE NEW SEASON

Here's the first Brockport Stylus hockey article of the 2016-2017 season. In it, Alison Muarer looks at new assistant coach Kris Horn and the team captaincy

The first few practices of the men’s ice hockey season have been underway. New players meld with old as the season begins for the Golden Eagles. With three 2016 graduates going off to play professionally, several freshmen and sophomores who have joined the team have some big shoes to fill.

As does the new assistant coach, Kris Horn. Horn is taking the place of Coach Steven Mallaro, who is now the head coach at King’s College in Pennsylvania.

Horn was hired just a few weeks before the start of the season, and was thrown onto the ice to handle conditioning training with the boys, whose names and numbers he has not yet had the time to memorize. Thankfully, the new coach is taking it in stride.

“[Head Coach Brian Dickinson] and I have had a good start, splitting the work,” Horn said. “The practices are longer, we’ve got a lot of conditioning. I’m handling more of the first half, with the drills and he’s doing more of the locker room stuff.”

Horn has plenty of coaching experience. Most recently, he worked at Union College, a Division I school. He has also been an assistant coach at Hamilton College, Oakland University, University of Massachusetts and Michigan State University, his alma mater.

The players are also getting to know the new coach well. Freshman forward No. 23 Hunter Laslo has bonded with the coach and especially feels he will be a good fit with the rest of the team as the season continues on.

“Coach Horn has only been here for a few days, but he’s already made a pretty big impact. I think everyone can say the same thing – we’re enjoying his presence around the locker room and on the ice,” Laslo said.

Not only is there a new coach, but a new captain as well; Aidan Verbeke is a junior who plays forward for the team. He majors in Journalism and Broadcasting.

Many of his teammates are very excited for his captaincy. His attitudes toward the game are strong and focused, as well as infectious. He is a playmaker and has the kind of strong leadership that will be good for the team’s morale.

The captain choice was made all the harder by the fact that last year’s captain, Jeremy DeFazio, made such an impact on the team. The transition between captains has been smooth and easy, since the two have many of the same favorable traits.

No.12 Zac Sikich is also a junior forward on the team. He and Verbeke have been friends for many years, dating back to when they were roommates playing for the Granite City Lumberjacks NA3HL team in Minnesota.

“He’s definitely the right pick and he’s going to lead us to something good this year,” Sikich said. “The team has been working well together, and Aidan has helped a lot with that.”

Horn also has good things to say about the captain. “Aidan’s been great.’’ Horn Said, ‘‘He’s made my transition a whole lot easier the past couple of days, and helping me fit in, and help me figure things out. He even showed me where my office was.”

Alternate Captains are senior defenseman No. 2 Rob Hall and junior forward No.19 Dylan Shapiro. All three captains are expected to be in the starting lineup.

The Golden Eagles have their first game on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. at Bill Gray’s Iceplex against the Nazareth Golden Flyers.

HORN JOINS COACHING STAFF

The College at Brockport is pleased to announce the hiring of Kris Horn as the new Assistant Coach for the ice hockey team.

Prior to joining the Golden Eagle staff, Horn spent one season with Division I Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., helping the Dutchman reach the ECAC postseason tournament.

"Kris is a great addition to our team this year. He brings a D1 mentality to Brockport and pushes our guys to play their best," remarked Head Coach Brian Dickinson. "We're thrilled to have him here and are looking forward to the start of the season."

Horn spent the 2014-15 season as an assistant coach at Hamilton College. Prior to joining the Continentals, Horn was an assistant coach for American Collegiate Hockey Association teams at Oakland University, the University of Massachusetts and Michigan State University.

Horn has earned a USA Hockey Level 5 coaching certificate. A Westland, Mich. native, Horn attended Culver Military Academy before moving on to Michigan State, where he received a B.A. in Marketing in 2006.

CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED

Coach Dickinson has announced the Golden Eagle captaincy for this season. Aidan Verbeke will wear the "C", while Rob Hall and Dylan Shapiro will sport the "A".

THE 2016-2017 SEASON PREVIEW: BROCKPORT HOCKEY IS GOOD HANDS

After losing the most decorated senior class in the college’s history, any hockey program would be shaking in its boots.

While it’s darn near impossible to make up for the absence of Brockport’s only two-time All-American (Chase Nieuwendyk), Brockport’s only 3-time All-SUNYAC pick (blueliner Chris Luker) and the College’s first SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Year (Chad Cummings), the Golden Eagles are in far better shape than one might think.

Those young men were leaders who helped to grow the next classes of hockey greatness, helping Coach Dickinson to develop the underclassmen and bring to them the confidence and “game within a game” knowledge that creates a winning team and individual excellence. Many of the Golden Eagles matured dramatically on the ice and it bodes well for their future.

Last year’s squad went 11-11-4. A cursory look at the 2016-2017 schedule and roster shows that this year’s version Golden Eagles could realistically reach 14 wins, a tally not achieved since the 2009-2010 season. The pieces are all there to point to such success.

Forwards

One of the biggest surprises of last season was Tim Kielich. He had one of the best freshman seasons of any Brockport player ever, tallying a whopping 31 points (12 goals, 19 assists). He won the conference’s Rookie of the Year honors, but was overlooked in the All-SUNYAC picks. He won’t be in the coming years; his poise and vision are extraordinary and he is as consistent as they come.

Tim Kielich is Brockport's superstar,
primed for another great season

He’ll be paired with junior Ryan Kangas, a speedster who amassed 12 goals and 14 assists last year and is one of the most underrated two-way forwards in the SUNYAC.

Another 20-plus point scorer is a holdover from last year. Aidan Verbeke had a 5-17-22 line and worked some magic with Zac Sikich, who had 10 goals in his sophomore campaign and is getting better with age. Don’t be surprised if Sikich lights the lamp more than a dozen times this season.

Defensemen

Losing Luker and Cummings hurts, but the defensive squad is developing nicely. Among them are Connar Bass and Nicholas Palumbo, who both earned spots on USCHO.com’s All-Rookie team for the conference. Those selection were made by SUNYAC coaches who now have to find ways to beat their stifling play for the next 3 years.

Senior Rob Hall brings consistent, unheralded play to the ice. Despite just 4 points on the season, he produces the way a true defenseman should, focusing on containing threats and staying out of the penalty box. The same holds true for the strong Brian Hurlimann, who had just 2 points last year, which, again belies how well he plays.

Three interesting non-freshman recruits to watch for are Brandon McMartin who played for SUNY Canton last year, Kevin Chilton who played for Nichols College and Bryan Carville who played for Hobart. They will all contribute out of the gate.

Goalies

It seems that the Todd Sheridan era redefined goaltending at Brockport as it has been a definite strength of the program since Todd hit the ice here ten years ago. In the years that followed we were blessed with the likes of Oliver Wren, Aaron Green, and Jared Lockhurst.

That strong tradition continues…

Last season’s #1 was Cole Burack, who showed flashes of brilliance that belie his .897 save percentage. He had some huge games and is undoubtedly the most athletic goaltender in the SUNYAC, regularly making highlight reel saves. He went 6-4-4 last year and there’s no reason to think that he shouldn’t exceed a .910 save percentage this season.  He’s “must watch” because you never know what sort of save he will make next.

Cole Burack plays an exciting brand of hockey

Sophomore Jake Moore appeared in 3 games last year, in which he secured a solid 3.21 GAA.

Both will be tested by freshman Matt Schneider, who had a stellar 2015-2016 season with the Florida Eels of the USPHL Elite league. In 26 games he had an amazing .945 save percentage and a 2.13 GAA.

All of the above, along with yet another strong recruiting class, show that Brockport Hockey is in good hands and primed for a successful – and entertaining – season that could take them deep into the SUNYAC playoffs.

The New Hartford, New York native appeared in 100 games during his collegiate career, recording 19 goals and 47 assists.

"Chris is a big, solid offensive defenseman who is coming off of a really good college career," said Landmesser. "I am looking forward to seeing him here in Mississippi as he makes the transition to the pro game."

"I've heard nothing but good things about the RiverKings organization," said Luker. "The RiverKings were one of the first teams that reached out to me and I'm excited about coming to this storied franchise."

KOMETS PICK UP NIEUWENDYK

The Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL announced Monday that four players have been added to the preseason roster. Defenseman Curtis Leonard and forward Mason Baptista have agreed to terms and will be returning to the Fort Wayne fold for 2016-17. Also rookie forwards Daniel Erlich and Chase Nieuwendyk have inked agreements to make their pro debuts with the Komets.

Nieuwendyk, 25, finished a four-year NCAA-III collegiate career with Brockport in the SUNYAC (State University of New York Athletic Conference) last season leading Brockport for the second straight year in goals with 14. The rookie forward also led the team with 37 points for the third consecutive season.

Nieuwendyk is a nephew of NHL Hall-of-Famer Joe Nieuwendyk and began his juniors career in 2008-09 with Brampton in the OJHL. The Georgetown, Ontario native led Brampton with 24 goals in 2009-10 and completed his juniors career in 2011-12 skating 49 games with Trenton, leading the golden Hawks with 27 goals and 57 points.

MALLARO TO BECOME KING'S FIRST ICE HOCKEY COACH

As a collegiate ice hockey player, Stephen Mallaro helped lead Oswego State University in upstate New York to back-to-back NCAA Division III National Tournament "Frozen Four" appearances in 2010 and 2011. Now, five years later, four as a collegiate assistant coach, Mallaro will take on the most unique opportunity of his career after being named the head coach of the new men's ice hockey program at King's College. Mallaro will start his new position on August 1 according to King's Director of Athletics Cheryl Ish.

On February 25, King's announced the addition of both men's and women's ice hockey programs with each sport slated to open competition in 2017-18. With head coaches of both sports scheduled to be hired this summer, King's will provide both the men's and women's programs with a full year of recruiting before entering competition. Mallaro is the first of the two head coaches to be hired and will take on the task of building the Monarchs from the ground up.

"We are thrilled to welcome Stephen Mallaro as the very first men's head ice hockey coach at King's College," Ish stated.  "Stephen came across as a great fit for King's the moment he stepped on our campus and that sentiment just grew throughout the entire interview process.  His commitment to the Division III philosophy, combined with his experience and a very competitive spirit, resonated with the search committee.  I am confident that Stephen will do an outstanding job with our men's ice hockey program.  He will have a busy year ahead in recruiting our first team of student-athletes, but I know he will represent King's in a first-class manner. We feel confident he is the person with the vision and work-ethic to build our program from square-one. With Stephen leading the program, we are all excited about this new chapter in King's College Athletics. We really feel we found an outstanding young coach in Stephen Mallaro and are thrilled he will become a part of the King's Community."

Mallaro comes to King's after spending the last two years as the assistant coach at NCAA Division III member Brockport State University, Brockport, NY.  Mallaro, who coached the Golden Eagles special teams and defense, helped Brockport to a combined 24-23-6 mark and two straight years of for qualifying post-season tournament play in the nationally-respected State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).

Now, at 29 years of age, Mallaro will have the rare challenge of building a collegiate ice hockey program from the ground up. Revolution Ice Center in nearby Pittston will serve as King's primary venue for practice and games.

"It's a dream come true," Mallaro said of being named King's first head coach. "To be able to start your own program and put your stamp on something is very special. I know the coaching business is not an easy mountain to climb, but with the support of good people, good things will happen. King's College is a very unique place. The campus is a very tight-knit community where you feel at home and everyone knows one another. The athletic department is fully supportive of the new ice hockey program and everyone I had contact with is excited to bring hockey to King's. I was very impressed with the people that I met on my visit and the values that they help bring to King's. I was able to interact with a number of administrators and coaches that are proud to be a part of the King's College family and that has me excited about joining their family. I would also like to thank Cheryl (Ish) and the search committee for putting their faith in me and giving me this tremendous opportunity."

As a collegiate player, Mallaro enjoyed a distinguished career as a four-year letterman and two-year starter at nationally-recognized Oswego State.

As a junior in 2009-10, he was a starting defenseman for the Lakers, who finished 26-3 overall and 15-1 in the SUNYAC, while winning the conference championship. Oswego earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Tournament and advanced to the Frozen Four where the Lakers fell to St. Norberts 4-3. Mallaro was the top-scoring defender for the Lakers that season, registering 17 points on seven goals and 10 assists.

As a senior team captain in 2010-11, Mallaro helped lead Oswego to a 23-5 record while again going 15-1 in the SUNYAC. After being upset in the SUNYAC Tournament semi-finals, Oswego received an NCAA national tournament at-large bid and once again advanced to the national semi-final round, dropping a 5-3 decision to Adrian College of Michigan. Mallaro again topped all Laker defensemen with 19 points on four goals and 15 assists.

Over the course of his four-year career at Oswego, Mallaro played in 68 games and totaled 38 points on 11 goals and 27 assists.  He was a first-team All-SUNYAC selection in 2010, then was named second-team all-conference as a senior in 2011.

After graduating from Oswego, Mallaro enjoyed a brief professional playing career. He played in the ECHL with the Elmira Jackals, the Trenton Titans, and finished the 2011-12 season as a member of the Gwinnett Gladiators, helping the team to a first-place finish in the Southern Division of the ECHL and a second place finish in the Eastern Conference. He also had a 10-day stint with the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Mallaro then began his coaching career as a two-year graduate assistant coach at Manhattanville College, earning his Master's degree in Sports Management in 2014, before joining the staff at Brockport State. At Manhattanville, he coached ECAC West "Co-Defensive Player of the Year" Anton Racklin, who went on to earn third-team Division III All-American honors in 2014.

As a first time head coach at a brand new program, Mallaro is well aware of the many responsibilities that will be necessitated by not only developing a program, but recruiting the right student-athletes who will become part of building a tradition at King's.

"I will be looking for student-athletes who will be the right fit for King's," Mallaro noted. "As a coach you never sacrifice character and we will know exactly what we are looking for.  We want to recruit elite people who are highly-competitive and want to be a part of the King's College culture. Academically, we will look for good students who will excel in the classroom and be good role models representing King's. Coaching is all about the process of developing people and we want quality student-athletes that want to be a part of the journey.  It is important to create an identity for the program and to familiarize the hockey world with the King's College brand.  I also am looking forward to meeting other coaches and staff members at King's and building a professional relationship with them."

Mallaro was practically born on the ice as he began skating at age three and first played competitive hockey at four years old. After continuing through the youth ranks he played three years of ice hockey at West Genesee High School in Syracuse, NY. before moving on to play at Northwood Prep in Lake Placid, N.Y. from 2004-06. He then spent a year playing junior hockey with the Nepean Raiders in Nepean, Ontario before moving on to his collegiate career at Oswego State in 2007-08. For Mallaro, each step along the way helped shape him for his first head coaching job.

"I have to thank my family for all the support they have given me over the years, Mallaro concluded. "I know it wasn't easy on my brother and sisters all the times my parents would be taking me to hockey games all over the country. I especially have to thank my mother for all the love and support she has given me throughout, not only during my playing days, but also my entire coaching career. To my dad, he always believed in me. I would also like to thank Frank Colabufo and Scott McDonald, my high school hockey coaches at West Genesee, for the development and encouragement to continue to get better every day. Thanks also go out to close friend and mentor David McNab, the Vice President of Hockey Operations of the Anaheim Ducks, for believing in my character, and to Mark Morris, my coach at Northwood who is now the head coach at St. Lawrence University, for influencing my style of coaching and passion for the game. I also want to thank Oswego State head coach Ed Gosek for recruiting me and giving me the opportunity to play college hockey, as well as Coach Arlen Marshall at Manhattanville and Coach Brian Dickinson at Brockport for providing me with coaching opportunities that led to this moment. Manhattanville director of athletics Keith Levinthal was also another person who did a great deal to help me. To all the people who have helped my coaching career move in the right direction and continue to encourage and support me, thank you. There are so many people that have been such a positive influence on my career and I am grateful for everything they have done for me."

When ice hockey officially begins play, King's will field one of only four NCAA Division III men's and women's programs in the entire state of Pennsylvania.  King's will join Neumann University, located in Aston in the Philadelphia area, Lebanon Valley College in Annville, and Chatham University in Pittsburgh as NCAA Division III varsity ice hockey members.  Chatham has had a women's program since 1996 but will be adding men's ice hockey in 2017-18.

"With the popularity of our own Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the influx of local high school programs, we at King's are thrilled to be part of the growth of ice hockey in Northeastern Pennsylvania," Ish concluded. "Being the first local college to field a varsity ice hockey program is exciting and there has definitely been a buzz since we announced we were adding the sport back in February. We look forward to starting this new chapter in King's College history."

According to the NCAA, during the 2015-16 season a total of 76 men's varsity programs competed in Division III while 58 women's varsity programs also took to the ice.

King's conference affiliation for both men and women's teams have yet to be finalized.
