SUNY Brockport will induct its newest members into the Brockport Athletics Hall of Fame during Homecoming Weekend at the Alumni Awards & Hall of Fame Dinner and Ceremony on Friday, October 7 at 6pm, in the Special Events Recreation Center.
Among them is Brian Cavanaugh '76.
Brian Cavanaugh's storied ice hockey career at Brockport has stood the test of time and to this day he is tied for fourth all-time with 124 career points (45 goals-79 assists). His 79 career assists rank third all-time. His 54 points in the 1973-74 season ranks second all-time in a single season at Brockport and his 35 assists in a single season ranks second all-time.
Cavanaugh holds the single game record for most total points with seven and he was the Golden Eagles' MVP three times while holding numerous Brockport scoring records upon graduation.
Cavanaugh went on to serve as Canisius' head hockey coach for 24 seasons and was the first varsity head coach in the school's history. With a 341-306-57 record, Cavanaugh is the winningest coach in program history and led the team with 15 winning seasons. With Cavanaugh at the helm, Canisius was able to elevate the program from Division III to Division I before the 1998-99 season.
Following his coaching career, he was named the Athletic Director at D'Youville from 2006-2019 and went on to become the Executive Director of Athletic Advancement at D'Youville.
